Most blogs don’t get a lot of traffic. If that’s you I can hear your frustration. It’s annoying when you put in all that effort and people don’t really pay any attention to you. Fortunately, you can change that. There are many proven and tried methods that will boost your traffic significantly and quickly. Most won’t even cost you any money!

A lot of people who come to your website are never going to come back again. That’s not because they don’t like your content. They might really have enjoyed it. The thing is that they’ve got so much going on that they’ve probably forgotten about it by the day’s end. Even if they haven’t, they’re not going to find it back if they look.
To make it less likely that this will happen, collect people’s emails. This is easy enough to do. You can use one of those lightboxes or just a bar at the top like hello bar. If you do decide to use a lightbox, consider setting it so that it only pops up after people have read your article. That’s far nicer to your audience and also more likely to be successful as they’re only going to know if they like your site once they’ve actually read your content.
Switch to longer posts
Write fewer posts but make them much longer. Find a topic that you know well and write an extremely detailed account of what people can do, how they can do it and other tips and tricks.
Why does this work? For two reasons.
- By writing a long post, you’re going to be ranking for long tail keywords which aren’t yet so competitive (long tail keywords are longer search phrases that people type into search engines).
- People are going to stick around longer on the site, to read your post when they do land there – thereby letting the search engine know that they sent these people the right way.
These two things can quickly push you up in the search algorithm rankings and in that way make it far more likely that you’ll get organic visitors in that way. And those are some of the best there are!

Upgrade the posts which are already doing well
You might think that the best strategy is to write hundreds of good posts and that this is what will get you a lot of attention online. The thing is, that’s not how the internet works. Internet pages follow a power rule, which is a line that looks a little bit like a Nike sign. That means that most articles get almost no attention, while a tiny percentage get everything.
So if you write good articles which are, say, in the top 10% of the internet you’re not actually going to get that much traffic. What will get you traffic is being in the top 0.1%.
So how do you get there? Well, the obvious way to get there is to write outstanding articles. But that’s hard to do. So a better strategy is to find the articles that are already doing quite well and make them better.
This can nudge them over that threshold and draw a lot of extra traffic to your site. As a bonus, if you keep editing and improving articles, then Google will notice and keep them ranking well for longer.
Spend more time on the headlines
Good headlines get clicked on. Bad ones don’t. It really is as simple as that. So write good headlines. Fortunately, if you don’t know how to write good headlines yet, then you don’t need to worry. You won’t need to reinvent the wheel.
People have done a lot of research about headlines and they’ve learned some important ideas. Here are some takeaways:
- Engage in storytelling. This is like the ‘everybody laughed at her when I walked onto the stage until she started to play’. Now people want to know what happened when she played, what they played and why they were laughing in the first place.
- Use emotionally powerful words. Examples include: secrets, tips, lowest, save money, expert, limited and unique.
- Say something that’s hard to believe or polarizing. Sure, you might get some people to be annoyed, but if they don’t click because they’re annoyed or because they don’t care doesn’t matter to you. What you want is people to click because they’re interested.

Of course, if you’re writing headlines that are punchy and catch, make sure you actually deliver because if they click through and they discover it’s just click bait, then they will click away again. Even worse, because they feel burned, the next time you try to get their attention, they will be less likely to come your way. And that will cost you audience in the long run.

Stop focusing on the numbers and start paying attention to the people
Not all visitors are built the same. Some people click on your link, spend three seconds looking at your main image and then never come back again. Other people come back again and again because they love your content.
Which do you think is the more valuable visitor?
So stop thinking of site visitors as just a number and instead focus on the people behind them. Engage with those people who talk with you. Show some love to the people who share your content, like it, or in other ways let you know that they like what you’re doing. This will make them far more likely to come back again and again. Even better, they might well share what you’re doing with their friends in turn.
And as we all know, we take things that our friends advise us a lot more serious than things that are advertised to us. So make sure that these people have reasons to keep coming back.
Don’t give up
These strategies can make a big difference in a month’s time. They can double or triple your audience – perhaps even more. At the same time, you need to have a solid base that you can build from. And those take time to build. You have to understand what you’re your niche is, you have to learn how to appeal to your audience, you have to convince people that you’re worthwhile.
These things aren’t always reflected in the numbers. So just because your readership isn’t growing, doesn’t mean things aren’t happening. And besides, it often takes a lifetime to become famous overnight.
