Chinese Mainland Stocks Rise Amid Optimism in AI Sector
On Thursday, China’s mainland equities experienced a notable upturn, primarily propelled by advancements in the optical communications and technology sectors.
This bullish trend was bolstered by optimistic forecasts from U.S.-based artificial intelligence firms, which heightened expectations for burgeoning demand in AI-related hardware and computing frameworks. In contrast, Hong Kong’s stock market exhibited relative stagnation, according to reports from Reuters.
By the midday recess, the prominent CSI300 index had ascended by 0.5%, while the Shanghai Composite Index recorded an increase of 0.4%. Conversely, the Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong experienced a modest uptick of 0.1%.
Leaders in the Optical Sector
Companies manufacturing optical modules emerged as significant beneficiaries within the market. Eoptolink Technology surged by 4.2%, TFC Optical Communication escalated by an impressive 10.5%, and Zhongji Innolight expanded by 5.5%.
These spikes in stock prices were catalyzed by positive projections from U.S.-listed companies CoreWeave and Super Micro Computer, which indicated a robust appetite for AI computing capabilities.
Additionally, a nearly 14% gain in U.S. optical communications firm Lumentum during New York sessions also contributed to the prevailing positive sentiment.
The index tracking China’s 5G communications advanced by almost 3%, while the technology-focused STAR50 Index saw an uplift of approximately 2%.
Furthermore, memory chip manufacturer CXMT realized a 1.3% increase, contributing to the overall beneficial momentum across numerous segments of China’s tech landscape.
Financial Sector Stability Amid Central Bank Position
In the financial domain, mainland stocks remained relatively stable after the People’s Bank of China signaled its intention to sustain a suitably accommodating monetary policy, suggesting that actionable measures would be taken when deemed necessary.
However, the central bank refrained from indicating any imminent reductions in policy rates or adjustments to banks’ reserve requirement ratios.
Mixed Fortune for Hong Kong Tech Stocks
In Hong Kong, major technology firms saw a slight increase of 0.3%, although Tencent Holdings experienced a significant setback, plunging 3.8% to reach a two-week nadir.
This downturn followed the announcement of the company’s unprecedented quarter of negative free cash flow coupled with an elevation in capital expenditures for artificial intelligence ventures.
Investors appeared to weigh apprehensions regarding sluggish consumption and the potential delay in realizing returns from augmented AI investments, thereby exerting downward pressure on Tencent’s stock.
Additionally, the materials sector in Hong Kong faced a decline of 3.6%, heavily influenced by gold mining companies, including a 5.9% drop for China Gold International Resources.

The trading session underscored the amplifying impact of the global AI investment cycle on Chinese technology stocks. Nonetheless, trepidations surrounding consumer demand, investment returns, and the performance of commodity-linked stocks served to temper broader market gains.
