Russia and Iran Strengthen Military Cooperation Amid Global Tensions
In the early stages of the conflict involving the United States and Israel, Russia has intensified its military and intelligence collaboration with Iran.
This partnership has reportedly included the provision of satellite imagery and drone technology, which aims to assist its primary Middle Eastern ally in targeting American forces, as detailed by The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday.
The publication indicated that Russia has been supplying Iran with crucial intelligence regarding the positions of U.S. military personnel across the Middle East, as well as data on the forces of Washington’s regional allies.
This exchange of support has drawn parallels to the aid rendered by the United States and its European counterparts to Ukraine during its protracted strife with Russia in recent years.
According to the Journal, the drone technology transferred by Moscow comprises upgraded components for the Shahed drones, an Iranian-engineered unmanned aerial vehicle. These enhancements are designed to boost navigation and targeting precision.
Capitalizing on its extensive experience with drone warfare in Ukraine, Russia has also offered Iran tactical counsel regarding the optimal deployment of drones in operations and suitable altitudes for striking designated targets.
Dara Massicot, a military expert from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, conveyed to The Washington Post that Iran’s military satellite capabilities are limited, rendering Russian imagery particularly invaluable.
This collaboration gains added weight, especially as the Kremlin has advanced its satellite technology during the four years of conflict in Ukraine.
In a recent discourse, Steve Witkoff, who served as President Donald Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East and led U.S. negotiations aimed at terminating the war in Ukraine, disclosed that Russia had previously assured the Trump administration that it was not relaying intelligence to Iran aimed at facilitating attacks.
Nevertheless, Trump expressed skepticism, indicating his belief that Moscow was indeed offering limited assistance to Tehran, paralleling the support extended to the Ukrainian military.
“I think he [Putin] may be helping them a bit,” Trump articulated in an interview with Fox News last week. “He probably thinks we’re helping Ukraine. They do it, and we do it.”
Relations between the Kremlin and Iran’s clerical regime have notably solidified since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, during which Iran also supplied drones. Furthermore, Russia has established itself as one of Iran’s primary arms suppliers.
