Cisco Unveils Revolutionary Quantum Switching Technology

3 min read Apr 24, 2026 09:31 AM IST

On Thursday, Cisco Systems introduced a remarkable switching chip purportedly capable of interfacing disparate quantum computing systems.

This innovation is a pivotal stride towards establishing a cohesive network of quantum machines, analogous to the functionality provided by Cisco’s equipment in the conventional internet landscape.

In tandem with other industry giants like Alphabet’s Google and IBM, Cisco is advancing the frontier of quantum computing technology, which possesses the potential to solve complex problems beyond the reach of classical computers.

Rather than fabricating its own quantum apparatus, Cisco is collaborating with various stakeholders to interconnect their devices effectively.

Contemporary quantum computers employ a myriad of methodologies; some utilize lasers to manipulate rubidium atoms suspended in vacuum environments, while others rely on superconductors cooled to near absolute zero.

Vijoy Pandey, senior vice president and general manager of Outshift, Cisco’s emerging technologies and incubation division, articulated that researchers in the quantum realm believe that each approach carries unique advantages for future applications.

Cisco’s innovative switch, operational at room temperature and utilizing standard telecommunications fiber-optic cabling, facilitates communication among these varied quantum methodologies.

“You can speak any language,” Pandey remarked.

While the advent of extensive networks of quantum computers is anticipated no earlier than the 2030s, Cisco’s switch could yield immediate security applications, as explained by Jeetu Patel, Cisco’s president and chief product officer.

Although the chip presented on Thursday remains a prototype, initial implementations may be feasible within a three-year horizon.

The essence of quantum mechanics hinges on the notion that information can exist in multiple states until observation occurs—illustrated famously by Schrödinger’s paradoxical feline, which remains both living and deceased until the box is opened.

Cisco’s switch is designed to interconnect multiple quantum sensors, already available in the market, within a network characterized by an entangled state.

Should an adversary—whether a hacker or a rogue artificial intelligence orchestrated by nefarious agents—attempt to infiltrate the network, the entangled state would collapse, providing definitive detection of the intrusion.

“If you can start detecting what is happening on the network through a quantum switch, it changes your defense posture almost entirely,” Patel emphasized.
