OpenAI Unveils GPT-5.5: A Revolutionary AI Model for Enhanced Utility
New Delhi: OpenAI has officially introduced GPT-5.5, its latest AI architecture for ChatGPT and Codex users, merely two months following the release of GPT-5.4.
Designed to accommodate intricate tasks, the model excels in coding, online research, data analysis, document generation, and various computer-related functions.
The rollout commenced on April 24 (IST) for paying subscribers of ChatGPT and Codex, with an API interface anticipated to launch promptly.
This update transcends the conventional model adjustments familiar to users. GPT-5.5 is presented as a more autonomous aide, equipped to tackle convoluted assignments, utilize tools efficiently, verify its outputs, and navigate through processes with minimal supervision.
OpenAI’s President, Greg Brockman, asserts that this iteration is markedly more intuitive than its predecessors, demonstrating enhanced capabilities with less human intervention.

Key Enhancements in GPT-5.5
According to OpenAI, GPT-5.5 excels in “agentic” tasks, allowing it to manage extensive projects and navigate through complex processes more adeptly than earlier models.
For instance, consider a developer utilizing GPT-5.5 to debug an expansive codebase or a corporate team employing it to convert rough data into polished reports. This clearly delineates OpenAI’s focus on improving productivity in this domain.
The firm highlights that GPT-5.5 maintains the same real-world per-token latency as GPT-5.4, despite its heightened intelligence. Furthermore, it consumes fewer tokens for equivalent Codex tasks, an important metric for prolonged coding and research endeavors.
OpenAI shared several benchmark results for the model:
- Terminal-Bench 2.0: 82.7%
- SWE-Bench Pro: 58.6%
- GDPval: 84.9%
- OSWorld-Verified: 78.7%
- Tau2-bench Telecom (without prompt tuning): 98.0%
GPT-5.5: Advancements in Coding and Office Functions
The most significant improvements appear in the coding realm. OpenAI describes GPT-5.5 as its most potent agentic coding model to date. Early users report that it excels in maintaining context across extensive systems, accurately identifying problem origins, and anticipating subsequent issues that may arise post-fix.
Michael Truell, Co-founder and CEO of Cursor, remarked, “GPT-5.5 demonstrates enhanced intelligence and resilience compared to GPT-5.4, showcasing superior coding capabilities and more dependable tool utilization.”
Moreover, the model is being promoted for knowledge-based tasks. OpenAI reports that its teams leveraged Codex alongside GPT-5.5 to analyze speaking request metrics, meticulously review 24,771 K-1 tax forms spanning 71,637 pages, and automate weekly business reporting.
GPT-5.5: Elevated Cybersecurity Measures
OpenAI asserts that GPT-5.5 features its most robust cybersecurity safeguards to date. The firm has classified its capabilities in cybersecurity and biological or chemical contexts as “High” under its Preparedness Framework, though the model has yet to attain a “Critical” cybersecurity designation.
Consequently, specific cybersecurity requests may undergo more stringent evaluations at launch. OpenAI indicates that validated defenders can apply for Trusted Access for Cyber to mitigate unwarranted refusals related to legitimate defensive activities.
Current Access to GPT-5.5
GPT-5.5 is being gradually made available to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users of ChatGPT and Codex. In ChatGPT, GPT-5.5 Pro will be accessible for Pro, Business, and Enterprise users.
Meanwhile, in Codex, GPT-5.5 is being rolled out with a 400K context window across Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Go plans.

For developers, OpenAI has indicated that GPT-5.5 API access will be forthcoming at a rate of $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output tokens.
Meanwhile, GPT-5.5 Pro API pricing is projected at $30 per million input tokens and $180 per million output tokens.
