Pinterest Reports Robust Q2 Growth Amid AI Enhancement

Pinterest has announced a commendable 18% increase in second-quarter revenue, reaching $1.18 billion compared to the previous year.

The company attributes this growth to the integration of artificial intelligence, which is enhancing both advertiser performance and fostering novel monetization avenues.

For the quarter concluding on June 30, the visually-driven platform recorded an impressive 11% rise in global monthly active users (MAUs), amounting to a historic total of 640 million. This milestone marks the 11th consecutive quarter of double-digit growth in user engagement.

Despite these gains, Pinterest reported a GAAP net loss of $47 million. However, adjusted EBITDA experienced a notable increase, soaring to $311 million.

Furthermore, net cash from operating endeavors stood at $293 million, and free cash flow ascended to $270 million.

Bill Ready, the CEO of Pinterest, remarked, “Our Q2 results exemplify the robustness of our platform: over $1.1 billion in revenue, an 18% rise, alongside 640 million monthly active users—our 11th consecutive quarter of double-digit user growth.”

He further emphasized, “AI is pivotal to our momentum, acting as a catalyst for our business. It is informed by our unique human curation of style and taste, rendering Pinterest more personalized and action-oriented for users, while simultaneously enhancing advertiser performance and broadening long-term monetization opportunities.”

Julia Donnelly, Pinterest’s finance chief, noted, “The transition of Prime Day from Q3 last year to Q2 this year contributed an approximate half-point boost to Q2 revenue, but will act as a comparable headwind for Q3 as numerous brands ramp up their advertising expenditures in conjunction with this event.”

Additionally, she mentioned, “In Q2, we benefited by nearly one point from World Cup-related spending, a favor that will not recur in Q3.”

In conjunction with its latest advertising initiatives, Pinterest is expanding the reach of its Performance+ product to a wider array of advertisers.

This includes the introduction of Smart Assembly, a creative optimization feature tailored for advertisers lacking product catalogs.

The company is also refining its measurement and bidding capabilities and extending its AI bidding pilot to more advertisers in the upcoming third quarter.

Sales and marketing expenditures for Pinterest surged to $374.3 million in the second quarter, up from $313.1 million a year earlier. The company did not specify any particular initiatives responsible for this increase.

In a significant move to enhance its offerings, Pinterest has acquired tvScientific, a performance advertising platform for connected TV.

This acquisition is aimed at extending Pinterest’s AI-driven advertising capabilities from mobile platforms to the connected TV space.

Looking forward, Pinterest anticipates third-quarter revenue in the range of $1.19 billion to $1.21 billion, equating to year-on-year growth of 13% to 15%, while factoring in a modest foreign exchange challenge. The company forecasts adjusted EBITDA to fall between $335 million and $355 million.
