Similarweb’s analysis reveals a rapid ascent in AI Mode adoption, with visits soaring from 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million by May 2026. This trend indicates an increasing consumer preference for conversational search interfaces.
The statistics illustrate a significant shift in internet search behavior. For over twenty years, Google’s search engine primarily acted as a conduit to other web locations, guiding users to external sites for information consumption. However, this paradigm is evolving.
Google is increasingly becoming a destination in its own right, aggregating information and delivering AI-generated summaries directly within search results, thereby diminishing the necessity for users to navigate to publisher websites.
This changes the very nature of how users craft their queries. According to Similarweb, the average length of Google searches has expanded over the past year, reflecting a shift from brief keyword inquiries to longer, conversational prompts aimed at eliciting comprehensive AI-generated responses.
Users are now posing complete questions or outlining intricate scenarios, mirroring behaviors cultivated on chatbot platforms.
Challenges for Publishers
For information providers, this transition poses substantial commercial hurdles. News organizations, educational sites, and content publishers have raised concerns that AI-generated summaries directly answer user queries, resulting in reduced referral traffic and fewer visits to their sites.
Similarweb’s findings from last year pointed to declining referral traffic as a critical drawback of Google’s AI search implementation, particularly affecting news publishers reliant on web visits for revenue.
The challenge extends beyond Google itself. As AI assistants increasingly summarize content drawn from the internet, publishers have expressed frustration that technology firms are profiting from their content without generating equivalent traffic or revenue.
This predicament has prompted segments of the publishing sector to explore novel strategies for safeguarding digital content.
Cloudflare has recently unveiled tools enabling website owners to block AI crawlers unless companies agree to compensate publishers through a licensing framework, signaling efforts to establish commercial protocols for AI content access.

Similarweb has noted a more than fivefold increase in AI-generated responses containing citations over the past year, indicating a shift towards improved transparency regarding the sources used in AI responses.
Nonetheless, referral citations remain sparse; as of May 2026, only 6.8% of U.S. desktop ChatGPT queries included citations directing users to external resources.
Variability in Citation Practices
Citation frequency exhibits considerable variation across sectors. Searches pertaining to travel, retail, and sports are more likely to include links to external content, reflecting user needs for direct access to booking platforms, product listings, or real-time data.
There are indications that referral traffic is improving. Following a search update on May 7, ChatGPT significantly enhanced the visibility of clickable links within its responses.
According to Similarweb, the proportion of U.S. desktop ChatGPT searches yielding visits to external websites more than doubled, escalating from 25% in March 2026 to nearly 60% by late May.
This development suggests that users are more inclined to visit original sources when AI responses feature clear citations and links. Nevertheless, the overarching trend appears unmistakable.
AI is progressively reshaping the economics of search, diverting value from website discovery to direct answer generation.
Rather than merely acting as intermediaries connecting users to publishers, AI-enhanced search engines are independently synthesizing information, enhancing user engagement within their own platforms for prolonged durations.
