Google Reduces Search Profile Follower Threshold

Google has officially announced a reduction in the follower requirement for Search profiles to 10,000. This amendment comes alongside enhancements for media organizations, including consolidated login access for multiple brands and a revamped presentation for articles featured on these profiles.

Today, Ibrahim Badr, Product Manager for Search, revealed these alterations. The Search profiles, which allow sources to merge their articles and social media updates into a single page, were launched in June, initially requiring a follower count tenfold higher than the new limit.

New Eligibility Requirement Set at 10,000

The revised threshold applies per account, thus having 10,000 followers on any combination of platforms, including YouTube, Instagram, X, or TikTok, qualifies users. Badr articulated:

“An increased number of U.S. publishers and creators are now eligible for Search profiles, as we have lowered the eligibility threshold to 10,000 followers across YouTube, Instagram, X, or TikTok.”

This marks the third adjustment in a series of changes affecting YouTube, Instagram, and X within just 15 weeks.

Initially, as of June 4, profiles required a substantial 100,000 followers on YouTube, Instagram, or X, or 300,000 on TikTok.

Subsequently, on August 12, Robby Stein, VP of Product for Google Search, indicated through X that these requirements would be eased. By this morning, Google’s support page listed eligibility at 35,000 across all four platforms.

It is worth noting that presently, these profiles are exclusively accessible within the United States.

Unified Login for Multiple Brands

Prior to the recent update, Google’s guidelines necessitated a distinct Google Account for each profile. However, as of September 16, the guidelines have been modified:

“Create a separate Search profile for each brand or identity you manage, such as a personal brand, podcast, or personality. A separate Google Account is required for each profile.”

The latest update abolishes this mandate for entities overseeing multiple publications. Badr stated:

“With the introduction of multi-account support, you can now claim and manage Search profiles for all your sub-brands from a single login, streamlining your ability to access and update profiles without the need for multiple accounts.”

Badr’s announcement emphasizes media organizations and their sub-brands, yet it remains unclear whether individual creators managing multiple profiles will benefit from the same convenience.

Revamped Article Appearance

The articles featured on profiles now exhibit extended headlines and enhanced thumbnail visuals. Badr elaborated:

“Image thumbnails are optimized to enhance the aesthetic appeal of your articles, and we have expanded headline lengths, improving readability and allowing your most recent contributions to distinguish themselves.”

The announcement did not specify the exact dimensions for thumbnails or the new headline lengths.

Significance of the Changes

This recent adjustment allows a U.S. publication with 12,000 YouTube followers, once ineligible, to now claim a profile.

According to Google’s own documentation, establishing a Search profile “doesn’t directly influence your content’s position in Google Search.”

The benefits of having a profile prominently emerge in the Discover feed, where followers may encounter a greater volume of content from their favored sources.

For companies managing multiple brands, the unified login feature alleviates the administrative burden that arose with each additional brand.

Future Prospects

The follower threshold has already undergone two modifications within a mere 15 weeks. Potential users are encouraged to consult Google’s help page for the latest eligibility requirements before determining their standing.

Currently, Search profiles are limited to the United States. In his announcement on August 12, Robby Stein expressed intentions to expand availability to additional countries in the near future; however, today’s update makes no mention of specific geographical expansions.
