Canva Implements Significant Job Cuts and Organizational Overhaul

The design platform Canva is embarking on a substantial restructuring initiative that includes job cuts and employee relocations.

This challenging announcement was conveyed to staff by Canva co-founder and CEO Melanie Perkins via an email dispatched on November 4.

“The decision to implement these significant changes regarding our organizational structure, team locations, and the competencies required for the future has been extraordinarily challenging,” Perkins acknowledged in her communication.

This marks the first extensive restructuring in Canva’s thirteen-year tenure. Notably, the company does not possess an office in India.

Major Restructuring Announced by Canva

The impending layoffs and organizational changes come at a pivotal time, as Canva, recognized as one of Australia’s preeminent technology startups, seeks to maintain its relevance amidst the burgeoning influence of artificial intelligence.

In her memo, Perkins disclosed that the company experienced its first deceleration in growth in a decade.

More than 1,200 employees, amounting to 22 percent of the workforce, are expected to be affected by this restructuring endeavor.

While some staff members will face layoffs, others will be invited to transition to centralized operational hubs.

Perkins stated, A total of 1,271 individuals, or 22% of Canva, will feel the impact. For many, this entails alterations to their roles or a request to relocate to key hubs.

Regrettably, it also necessitates bidding farewell to colleagues and friends who have been instrumental in shaping Canva into its current form.

The content of Perkins’s email was subsequently published on the Canva website for broader access.

“The Most Challenging Period in Our 13-Year Journey”

Perkins deemed the layoffs a necessity, asserting that minor adjustments were insufficient to sustain the organization’s viability.

Describing the restructuring as “the hardest moment in our thirteen-year history,” she remarked that Canva must revert to its foundational principles as a nimble enterprise characterized by “empowered teams” that possess the autonomy to make decisions and own their contributions.

In her correspondence, Perkins noted the unprecedented slowdown in growth at the Australian design startup, indicating a revision in its revenue growth forecast from 30% to 20% in August.

“This year has proven to be our most formidable challenge, and as previously communicated, we faced our first slowdown in a decade,” she noted.

Changes on the Horizon for Canva

Canva is redefining its organizational framework and operational dynamics, driven by three primary changes:

  • Simplification of Structure: Canva intends to integrate its Product, Growth, and Platform teams into a cohesive Product Organization. This consolidation aims to minimize handover delays, enhance coordination, and furnish teams with greater independence and ownership.
  • Reduction of Specialized Roles and Management Layers: The company proposes to unify specialized positions into broader roles, streamline overlapping duties, and simplify the organizational hierarchy.

This strategy seeks to empower teams with comprehensive responsibility for projects from inception to completion.
  • Relocation of Certain Employees: Sydney will serve as the principal hub for an expanded array of product teams and select other roles.

Starting in January, Canva will require a sizable portion of hybrid employees to work in-office approximately two to three days per week, contingent upon their role and location. Support for relocation will be afforded to those moving.

While operating across various countries has yielded significant advantages and attracted diverse talent, it has also complicated our ability to convene the right personnel to tackle complex challenges.

A sign with the word Market is mounted on a black frame against a red brick wall.

We remain committed to cultivating our global team, especially in areas where proximity to our community, clientele, and market is paramount, the company articulated.
