Mobile Gaming and AI: Key Considerations for Chipset Evaluation
NEW DELHI: Mobile gaming and artificial intelligence (AI) emerge as pivotal factors that original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) assess when scrutinising chipset capabilities, as articulated by a prominent executive at Qualcomm.
“Gaming is an immensely passionate subject among our clientele. In several markets, it serves as a primary criterion for evaluating chipsets,” stated Christopher Patrick, the vice president and general manager of mobile handsets at Qualcomm Technologies, in a discussion with ETTelecom.
He further elaborated that smartphone manufacturers are increasingly engaging in dialogues surrounding AI, particularly as it relates to gaming, power efficiency, and the overall efficacy of system-on-chip (SoC) designs.
In accordance with prevalent usage patterns, smartphone brands are gravitating towards flagship processors that offer advanced thermal management and support for 120Hz-144Hz display technologies.
“Qualcomm possesses a distinctive stature within the industry alongside an unparalleled array of products. This diversity empowers us to specialise in various domains,” he noted.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon-powered gaming smartphones are presently at the forefront of the market, purportedly delivering stellar performance and graphics, bolstered by state-of-the-art cooling mechanisms, extended battery longevity, and dedicated gaming triggers, according to the chip manufacturer based in the United States.
Patrick also asserted that a smartphone’s camera serves as the “most significant factor” influencing consumer choices among divergent phone brands, emphasising the importance of maintaining a unique identity among OEMs.
In 2024, the San Diego-based firm unveiled the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2, a competitively priced 4nm octa-core processor, engineered to facilitate Gigabit 5G connectivity for ultra-budget smartphones.
“This (Snapdragon 4s Gen 2) significantly aids the industry’s evolution toward embracing 5G technology, a capability every consumer rightfully deserves,” he commented.
Qualcomm, a leading fabless semiconductor company, operates within both the chip manufacturing and technology licensing arenas.

In Q1 2026, Qualcomm retained a robust foothold in the premium smartphone segment (priced above ₹30,000), accounting for over 50% of Android smartphone shipments within this price category.
In contrast, Taiwanese competitor MediaTek maintained its leadership in India’s smartphone chipset market, capturing a 51% shipment share, as reported by Counterpoint Research.
