Surge in DuckDuckGo App Installs Amidst Google’s AI Search Overhaul

The company’s CEO, Gabriel Weinberg, has previously contended that Google’s exclusive default search agreements have hindered competitors from gaining traction.

During Google’s 2023 antitrust trial, Weinberg asserted that these default search contracts have significantly obstructed DuckDuckGo’s efforts to establish itself as a viable alternative on other browsers.

This week, he attributed the recent uptick in DuckDuckGo installs directly to Google’s foray into AI-driven search.

“Google is force-feeding AI with no way to opt out,” Weinberg remarked on Tuesday, reflecting on Google’s search transformation. “Consequently, their results are deteriorating rather than improving. Our objective is to empower users by allowing them to determine their preferred level of AI involvement.”

DuckDuckGo noted a notable rise in visits to its AI-free search page, noai.duckduckgo.com, during the same span. This page saw an average week-on-week growth of 22.7%, peaking at 27.7% on May 24.

This unique platform disables all AI features by default, including AI-assisted responses and AI-generated visuals, standing in stark contrast to Google, where AI Overviews are integral to the default search setup.

A company spokesperson mentioned that while Google does provide a web filter for users preferring only blue links, the default experience remains dominated by AI Overviews, which users cannot deactivate.

DuckDuckGo indicated that the trend has been most pronounced in the U.S., persisting even through the Memorial Day weekend—a period typically associated with decreased traffic.

Supporting data from third-party analytics firm Apptopia reported a 29% increase in daily DuckDuckGo downloads in the U.S. during the same timeframe, coupled with a 12% increase on a global scale.

This backlash does not imply that users are altogether dismissing AI. DuckDuckGo has its own AI offering, Duck.ai, which allows access to various models without the necessity of creating an account.

This service features notable models such as Anthropic’s Claude 4.5 Haiku, Meta’s Llama 4 Scout, Mistral’s Small 3 24B, and OpenAI’s GPT-5 mini.

Notably, DuckDuckGo ensures user privacy by stripping IP addresses before requests reach model providers, erasing conversations within 30 days, and preventing chat data from contributing to training.
