AI Boom: Big Tech’s Earnings Insights

For almost two years, the preeminent question looming over the artificial intelligence (AI) surge has revolved around whether the substantial expenditures by major technology corporations would yield enhanced profitability or devolve into an exorbitant competition for market supremacy.

Recent quarterly disclosures by Microsoft and Amazon appear to have finally begun to address investor concerns.

Both tech powerhouses reported cloud growth that surpassed expectations while clearly indicating a critical message: AI demand no longer poses a challenge—capacity does.

The earnings reports alleviated apprehensions regarding returns on AI investments and reinforced the notion that artificial intelligence is evolving into a pivotal growth catalyst for the technology sector.

Microsoft and Amazon Show Strong Growth

Microsoft unveiled a remarkable 39% year-on-year growth in Azure, with its cloud revenue surpassing US$51.5 billion for the first time.

Notably, the management emphasized that Azure’s expansion was not hampered by consumer demand, but rather by the limited availability of GPUs.

In a similar vein, Amazon disclosed that its cloud segment, Amazon Web Services (AWS), achieved a 37% year-on-year revenue increase, totaling US$42.2 billion—the swiftest growth in over four years. The company cautioned that AI demand may eclipse available cloud capacity through 2028.

To capitalize on this burgeoning opportunity, Amazon has escalated its projected capital expenditures for 2026 to nearly US$220 billion, reflecting management’s firm belief that the demand for AI infrastructure will persist at high levels for years ahead.

The market reacted positively, with Microsoft shares soaring over 15% following robust quarterly results, while Amazon’s stock climbed by 15.3% after reporting more than US$62 billion in quarterly profit and a commendable 20% revenue growth, significantly outpacing analysts’ predictions.

Is AI the Next Growth Engine?

As per Ross Maxwell, Global Strategy Operations Lead at VT Market, the latest earnings suggest that the cycle of AI investment is starting to yield tangible financial benefits.

“Many investors have doubted whether expenditures on AI infrastructure would translate into higher earnings. The recent results indicate that we are beginning to see this come to fruition, with substantial revenue growth validating significant capital investments,” he stated.

Maxwell asserted that Microsoft’s diversified business model continues to provide multiple growth avenues through cloud computing, enterprise software, and AI integration.

Meanwhile, Amazon’s strength in its cloud, retail, and advertising sectors positions it well to invest further in AI without exerting undue stress on profitability.

He believes these results bolster confidence that AI is evolving into a significant earnings driver; however, companies that fail to convert hefty AI investments into revenue growth could struggle to justify elevated valuations.

The Next Challenge

Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, posits that the sector has transitioned into a new phase where infrastructure investments are beginning to deliver quantifiable commercial gains.

According to Jefferies, global data center demand is projected to reach 21.1 GW by 2025, while operational capacity is anticipated to be only 8.9 GW, underscoring a substantial infrastructural deficit.

Ponmudi elaborates that the challenges now facing the AI industry transcend merely constructing superior models; rather, it requires the swift augmentation of data centers, GPUs, networking, and power infrastructure to meet surging demand.

He remarked that the past two years had been marked by concerns about whether AI investments would adversely impact profitability.

In contrast to slowing expenditures, major technology firms are intensifying their investments as customer demand continues to outstrip available capacity.

“The key takeaway from these earnings is unequivocal: AI demand is no longer in question. The actual hurdle is establishing sufficient infrastructure to keep pace with it,” he asserted.

Ponmudi believes AI has traversed through three distinct phases: an initial exuberance surrounding generative AI, followed by a dominant era of substantial infrastructure investment.

The sector is now entering a tertiary phase, where these investments are beginning to yield meaningful revenue growth.

This transition could significantly alter investors’ perspectives regarding the sector.

While doubts about valuations and long-term returns on AI expenditures are unlikely to dissipate soon, the latest earnings from Microsoft and Amazon have provided robust evidence that the investment cycle is beginning to translate into tangible business growth.
