Amazon Increases Minimum Starting Wage to $20 per Hour

In a significant move, Amazon has announced an elevation of the minimum starting pay for qualified full-time employees in its core operations within the United States to $20 per hour.

This adjustment is complemented by two additional enhancements to employee benefits. The company disclosed these changes in a formal blog post, where it revealed a novel lifetime banking benefit alongside grocery discounts for its U.S. workforce.

Udit Madan, Senior Vice President at Amazon, emphasized that these three initiatives stem from the company’s annual assessment of pay and benefits, referring to them as “three big new announcements that I hope our team will love.”

According to the firm, average hourly compensation for eligible core operations personnel will approach nearly $24, while total average compensation, inclusive of benefits, will surpass $32 per hour.

Pay Increase to $20 per Hour for Core Operations Staff

A $1 increment in hourly wages will be implemented for eligible employees within Amazon’s core operations, thereby establishing the minimum starting wage at $20 across the nation.

Consequently, the average hourly remuneration is expected to escalate to nearly $24 per hour. When factoring in the value of benefits, Amazon asserts that the average total compensation will exceed $32 hourly.

Additionally, the company offers an annual step plan wherein employees receive periodic pay increases throughout their initial three years of employment.

Introduction of Lifetime Banking Benefit for Employees

The second initiative unveiled by Amazon is a banking service dubbed Day 1 Financial, designed to provide qualified employees and their families with access to banking services via First Tech Federal Credit Union.

This benefit is structured to remain accessible for life, extending to the employee’s spouse and children, even post-employment with Amazon.

Notably, the banking accounts will incur no overdraft fees, monthly maintenance charges, or minimum balance requirements on standard checking and savings accounts.

Amazon also highlighted that no credit history would be necessary for employees to establish checking or savings accounts.

Furthermore, the benefit encompasses access to thousands of surcharge-free ATMs along with an annual reimbursement of up to $300 for out-of-network ATM charges.

The rollout for Day 1 Financial is anticipated to commence in late 2026, reaching widespread availability in 2027.

Grocery Discounts for Amazon Employees

Adding to the announced benefits, Amazon is set to introduce an extensive grocery discount program. Commencing on October 1, 2026, every U.S. employee will be eligible for an uncapped 10% discount on qualifying grocery and everyday items purchased through Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market online.

Moreover, employees will be entitled to an uncapped 20% discount on qualifying purchases made at Whole Foods Market locations, including offerings from the hot bar and salad bar.

This discount applies to purchases made via the employee’s Amazon account and is combinable with any existing Prime member discounts.

These new benefits enhance the already robust compensation package Amazon offers eligible employees, which includes immediate healthcare coverage for regular full-time staff, with an Essential Plan available for $5 weekly and $5 copays, complimentary Prime membership, prepaid tuition through Career Choice, a 401(k) with company matching, paid parental leave, and flexible time off.
