Apple Introduces Foldable Smartphone: The iPhone Duo
Apple has ventured into the foldable smartphone arena with the debut of the iPhone Duo, signifying a monumental design transformation in the iPhone lineage that has been nearly two decades in the making.
In the Indian market, the base model is priced at ₹2,99,900, while the premium 2TB variant is anticipated to reach approximately ₹4.5 lakh.
In the United States, the iPhone Duo is available for $1,999, which approximately converts to ₹1.90 lakh based on an exchange rate hovering around ₹95 to the dollar.
Notably, this means the foldable device is nearly 58 percent, or about ₹1.1 lakh, more expensive in India than in the US.
This substantial price hike has quickly sparked conversations, especially surrounding the 2TB model, whose cost is comparable to a modest hatchback or a round-trip airfare to the United States.
The disparity in pricing cannot solely be attributed to exchange rates. An analysis of the underlying factors reveals the reasons behind Apple’s elevated costs for its foldable iPhone.
Factors Behind the iPhone Duo’s High Price Tag in India
A simple conversion of dollars to rupees fails to encapsulate the myriad of taxes, duties, distribution costs, and other logistical expenses associated with marketing a high-end smartphone in India.
Incorporating import duties along with an 18% Goods and Services Tax (GST) on smartphones elucidates part of the apparent price discrepancy.
The expenditures related to importing both components and finished products inevitably inflate the final price.
Furthermore, positioning plays a critical role in the pricing strategy. Foldable devices occupy a niche market, comprising less than 2% of global smartphone sales.
In contrast to the increasingly homogenized designs of standard smartphones, foldables distinguish themselves with a unique form factor.
Consumers are thus investing not only in additional screen real estate but also in a standout device amidst a saturating smartphone landscape.
The iPhone Duo’s introduction at $1,999 aligns it with premium offerings in the foldable smartphone segment.
Moreover, the iPhone Duo diverges from traditional smartphone paradigms. Its foldable architecture demands specialized components, including flexible OLED displays and intricate hinge mechanisms.
Furthermore, high-end camera modules, processors, and other elements contribute to an elevated bill of materials. A significant portion of these costly components is still subject to import duties, directly impacting costs before assembly can commence.
iPhone Duo Features
When fully extended, the iPhone Duo boasts a 7.6-inch inner display alongside a 5.4-inch outer screen.
It operates on the A20 Pro chip, the same as that found in the iPhone 18 Pro models, complemented by a reimagined iOS experience tailored specifically for the foldable design.
Apple has prioritized creating a device that is both thinner and lighter than many of its existing counterparts in the foldable market. Additionally, the inner display showcases a matte finish to minimize glare.
The iPhone Duo is available in four storage configurations: 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. However, it does not feature the advanced camera suite available in the iPhone 18 Pro, opting instead for a side-mounted fingerprint sensor in lieu of facial recognition technology.

Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo are set to commence on October 16, with official sales kicking off on October 23.
Will the Price Discrepancy Between India and the US Decrease?
The local assembly of iPhones has enabled Apple to lessen its reliance on imported devices while enhancing supply chain efficiency. However, this strategy does not eliminate costs associated with imported components, taxes, and other expenditures.
Should high-value components continue to be imported rather than manufactured or sourced locally, the advantages of assembling iPhones in India may not sufficiently alleviate retail prices for consumers.
