Apple Ventures into AI Server Development
Apple Inc. (AAPL) is reportedly embarking on the development of cutting-edge enterprise AI servers, leveraging its proprietary chip technology and potentially utilizing Nvidia Corporation’s (NVDA) networking infrastructure.
This move indicates a prospective foray into AI-focused infrastructure and suggests a thaw in the historically competitive relationship between the two tech giants.
A recent report by The Information reveals that Apple is contemplating two configurations of the server: a compact variant equipped with two of its forthcoming M8 Ultra chips and a more expansive model featuring four such chips.
Furthermore, the report indicates that the tech behemoth is exploring the integration of Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion technology for optimized inter-chip connectivity.
Nevertheless, it remains uncertain whether this initiative will proceed in collaboration with Nvidia or independently, as the project is still susceptible to cancellation.
The servers are poised for deployment to artificial intelligence developers, businesses, and government entities, although market introduction is not anticipated until 2029.
AAPL stock experienced a modest uptick of 0.5% in morning trading, while NVDA stock rose by as much as 1.3%.
Retail sentiment concerning Apple on Stocktwits has shifted to ‘neutral’ from a previous ‘bullish’ stance, whereas Nvidia has remained consistently in the ‘bearish’ sentiment range.
Prospective Growth in AI Infrastructure
Apple is already engaged in manufacturing servers for Private Cloud Compute, which caters to AI workloads that exceed the processing capabilities of its iPhones and Macs.
Yet, sources intimate that the company’s internally developed connectivity solutions are deemed inadequate—too slow and costly—for extensive deployment.
This is where Nvidia’s expertise becomes pivotal. The NVLink Fusion framework consists of a sophisticated array of switches, chiplets, and software engineered for high-efficiency communication among various processors within data centers.
Notably, Amazon’s (AMZN) cloud division recently announced plans to amplify its utilization of NVLink Fusion for next-generation AI server architectures.
A potential alliance with Apple could furnish Nvidia with a substantial client within the networking sphere, even as Apple develops its own chips poised to rival Nvidia’s AI processors.
Apple’s Re-emergence in the Enterprise Server Arena
This prospective server initiative is set against a backdrop of surging demand for high-performance Macs among AI developers. In the latest financial quarter, Macs emerged as Apple’s fastest-growing product segment, with sales soaring nearly 29% to reach $10.4 billion.
In June, Apple hosted an event titled “Business at the Park,” aimed at showcasing its hardware capabilities tailored for AI applications to various large corporations and AI-centric companies.
A return to the enterprise server market would signify a major transformation for Apple, which previously marketed its Xserve server line from 2002 to 2011 but ultimately struggled to establish a foothold.
Intensifying Collaboration with Nvidia
The potential server partnership would indicate a significant shift in the dynamic between Apple and Nvidia, which have historically had a tumultuous relationship.

Since incorporating Nvidia graphics processors into its Macs in 2001, the two companies have experienced friction over various business-related disagreements.
Interestingly, reports suggest that Apple is already deploying Nvidia chips within data centers managed by Google as part of its renewed efforts regarding Siri.
Additionally, the companies have ostensibly engaged in discussions surrounding Nvidia’s AI solutions and other collaborative avenues that could assist Apple in bridging its AI development gaps.
