Anthropic PBC Secures $65 Billion Funding Round, Surpassing OpenAI Valuation

(May 29) Anthropic PBC has successfully secured a monumental $65 billion (RM257.69 billion) in a recent funding initiative, catapulting the artificial intelligence (AI) firm’s valuation to an impressive $965 billion, inclusive of this investment, thus eclipsing its competitor OpenAI for the first time.

This funding announcement, made on Thursday, was spearheaded by notable investment firms including Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, and Sequoia Capital.

Each leading investor contributed over $2 billion, as sources familiar with the situation have indicated. Sequoia has opted not to comment, while the other firms have yet to respond to inquiries.

Alphabet Inc’s Google played a significant role, injecting several billion dollars into this round as part of its previously disclosed plan to invest as much as $40 billion in Anthropic over time.

Additionally, Amazon.com Inc contributed $5 billion, also aligning with a prior commitment, as noted in a blog post by Anthropic.

Google refrained from providing comments regarding the investment. Other contributors, such as Micron Technology Inc, Samsung Electronics Co., and SK Hynix Inc., have also played a role with undisclosed amounts, significantly elevating the funding total beyond Anthropic’s initial goal of $30 billion.

This substantial funding round materialized within mere weeks, illustrating robust investor interest in the creators of Claude.

As reported by Bloomberg News, by late April, Anthropic was contemplating whether to initiate new financing at a valuation exceeding $900 billion, following multiple unsolicited proposals. The AI start-up then engaged in advanced negotiations earlier this month.

Founded in 2021 by a coalition of former OpenAI employees, Anthropic has rapidly ascended as a frontrunner in the AI landscape.

Its innovations encompass a suite of AI tools designed to revolutionize business operations, spanning tasks from coding to cybersecurity.

Both Anthropic and OpenAI are anticipated to pursue public offerings as early as this autumn, according to Bloomberg News.

Following this recent funding, Anthropic is poised to proceed with an initial public offering within that timeframe, per insider insights.

Anthropic has chosen to refrain from commenting further.

Looking ahead, the company forecasts a revenue of $10.9 billion for the second quarter, marking more than a twofold increase from the preceding three-month period, fueled by escalating demand for its AI solutions, as reported by Bloomberg News. Notably, the company is also on track for its inaugural profitable quarter.

Anthropic has informed investors that its annualized run-rate revenue will surpass $50 billion by the end of next month, according to individuals well-informed on the matter.

As of July of last year, the run-rate—a metric that estimates full-year revenue based on sales from a shorter span—was recorded at $4 billion.

In contrast, OpenAI was recently valued at $852 billion following a funding round concluded in March. The company is expected to confidentially submit draft documentation for a public offering in the near future.
