Jack Dorsey Announces Substantial Workforce Reduction at Block
In a bold move, Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter, has revealed that his latest enterprise, Block, will undergo a workforce reduction of nearly 50%, attributing this significant decision to the transformative effects of artificial intelligence.
Block, a prominent player in the FinTech landscape, which oversees platforms such as Square, Cash App, and Tidal, is poised to decrease its personnel from over 10,000 employees to fewer than 6,000.
Following the announcement, the company’s stock experienced a remarkable surge, climbing over 20% in value.
Dorsey anticipates that a multitude of firms will soon arrive at similar conclusions, prompting analogous structural adjustments within the next year.
In a candid letter addressed to shareholders, Dorsey articulated: “Intelligence tools have revolutionized the essence of building and managing a company. The internal ramifications are already evident.”
Dorsey continued, expounding the advantages of a streamlined workforce: “A significantly smaller team, equipped with the tools we are developing, can accomplish more with greater efficacy. The capabilities of intelligence tools are accelerating at an unparalleled pace.”
He articulated his belief that many enterprises are lagging behind in this realization, asserting: “I would prefer to navigate this evolution transparently and proactively rather than reactively.”
The billionaire also emphasized, “A company of our reduced size should not be sluggish. Our decision-making, shipping, and learning processes will be expedient. We are constructing a framework designed for agility.”
Dorsey expressed confidence that a more compact and astutely intelligent Block will enhance its overall valuation significantly. “All our future endeavors will be aligned with this vision,” he asserted.
Addressing Block’s workforce, Dorsey characterized the decision as “one of the most challenging in our company’s history.”
In a transparent communication, he stated: “For those affected, you will receive a severance package of 20 weeks’ salary plus one additional week for every year of service, equity vesting until the end of May, six months of healthcare coverage, your corporate devices, and $5,000 to assist in your transition.”
He clarified: “This decision does not stem from crisis; our business remains robust, with gross profit on an upward trajectory, an expanding customer base, and improving profitability.”
Yet, Dorsey acknowledged a paradigm shift: “We are already observing that the intelligence tools we are pioneering, combined with streamlined teams, are crafting a novel operational framework that fundamentally redefines company management, and this evolution is accelerating quickly.”
He elaborated on his rationale: “Faced with the choice of gradual layoffs over months or years versus decisive action now, I opted for the latter. Continuous rounds of reductions are detrimental to morale, focus, and the confidence our customers and shareholders place in us.”
Dorsey expressed his desire to act forthrightly: “I prefer to take decisive measures now and construct from a foundation we advocate rather than manage a protracted reduction towards a similar outcome.”

He concluded by highlighting the advantages of a smaller firm: “Such a structure provides the flexibility to grow appropriately on our own terms, avoiding perpetual reactions to market fluctuations. While this monumental decision carries inherent risks, so does stagnation.”
