NEW YORK CITY – As the festive shopping season commences, Stuart Appelbaum, President of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), has articulated a poignant message emphasizing the necessity for dignified and respectful treatment of workers across various domains—from in-store shopping and e-commerce warehousing to agriculture and beyond.
The holiday period, traditionally fraught with intense pressures for retail labor, encounters unprecedented challenges this year.
Escalating economic uncertainty, the pervasive introduction of AI (Artificial Intelligence) in workforce management and inventory control, persistent incidents of theft and violence, coupled with a contraction in seasonal hiring despite surging consumer demand, have concocted a perfect storm for employees.
While businesses and consumers prepare for tariffs and disruptions in supply chains, it is the front-line workers who bear the brunt of the ensuing stress and peril.
It is critical to recognize that retail workers are not the architects of these issues, and they must not be left vulnerable.
Across various retail environments, employees are increasingly subjected to disrespect, harassment, and even aggressive behavior from exasperated customers.
No individual should live in fear for their safety merely for fulfilling their job responsibilities.
Employers are urged to ensure adequate staffing levels, implement security measures, and establish clear protocols for addressing aggressive behavior. Consumers, on the other hand, must remember that kindness is invaluable and can make a significant difference.
Within the e-commerce sector, particularly in substantial fulfillment operations such as those run by Amazon, workers are experiencing intensified demands.
Algorithmic oversight, combined with AI-driven scheduling and processing systems, penalizes workers for minimal delays while compelling them into obligatory overtime.
The prevalence of physical injuries and occupational burnout is alarming as Amazon fails to hire sufficient personnel or respect unionized workers.
Individuals are not machines, and their worth should not be dictated by algorithms.
Amazon and other leading retailers must ameliorate excessive quotas, embrace transparency, and cease anti-union activities—period.

As families gather to celebrate the season, it is essential to acknowledge the contributions of farm workers, food processing employees, and distribution personnel who play crucial roles in making the festivities possible.
These workers often toil under extreme weather conditions, frequently lacking necessary protections.
They, too, form an integral part of what renders this season special, warranting safety, stability, and a voice at their workplaces.
The retail landscape is evolving rapidly, with AI now woven into every aspect from staffing to loss prevention.
However, technology must serve human interests, not exploit them.
Automation should never diminish human dignity, safety, or the value of individuals.
It is imperative to establish and enforce regulations to combat workplace violence, safeguard worker rights, oversee the application of AI, and curtail perilous quotas.
Nevertheless, legislation alone is insufficient.
Employers, policymakers, and consumers must shoulder their responsibilities to ensure this truly is a season marked by goodwill—beginning with the everyday dignified treatment of workers.
