Tech behemoth Apple has unveiled a novel feature dubbed “Ask to Browse.” This addition is part of an extensive array of children’s safety tools set to debut later this year for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users.
Accompanying the launch are updates to iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, aiming to augment parental oversight regarding the websites accessible to their children.
The announcement coincides with enhancements to various parental control features, including Time Allowances, communication approvals, and an overhauled Screen Time dashboard.
Functionality of ‘Ask to Browse’
The “Ask to Browse” functionality serves as a new parental control mechanism, mandating that children request permission prior to accessing any unapproved website.
This innovative approach mirrors the existing “Ask to Buy” system, which necessitates parental consent before children can download applications or engage in in-app purchases.
With “Ask to Browse” activated, a child attempting to access a new site via Safari must submit a request to a parent or guardian, who will then determine whether access is granted or denied.
When a child seeks to visit an unauthorized link, the system intervenes, halting the action before sending a real-time permission request to the parent’s device.
Only upon the parents’ approval can the child gain entry to the desired webpage. At present, the feature is confirmed to operate exclusively within Safari, with no definitive information regarding compatibility with third-party browsers.
Additional Safety Features Arriving with iOS 27
“Ask to Browse” constitutes one component of a more comprehensive suite of child safety enhancements Apple will be implementing this year.
- Parents will gain control over their children’s interactions via Messages, FaceTime, and Phone, including an option that necessitates consent for new contacts.
- The Communication Safety feature will automatically obscure violent or gory content in Messages and FaceTime calls for users under 18, similarly to its current handling of nudity.
- A complete redesign of the Screen Time dashboard emphasizes average device usage while reducing visual clutter. Parents can now establish Time Allowances across broader categories, such as Games and Social Media, rather than individually for each app.
