Arm Holdings Reports Encouraging Quarterly Results Amid Smartphone Concerns
Arm Holdings has unveiled quarterly results that surpassed expectations, coupled with an optimistic revenue forecast for the ongoing quarter.
This reflects a persistent demand for infrastructure related to artificial intelligence. Nonetheless, shares of the chip designer experienced a decline of nearly 7% in after-hours trading as the company hinted at diminishing trends in smartphone royalty revenues for the upcoming quarter, according to a report by Reuters.
The British semiconductor intellectual property firm projected revenue of $1.38 billion for the second quarter, exceeding Wall Street’s anticipations of $1.34 billion, as indicated by LSEG data.
Furthermore, it forecasts adjusted earnings of 47 cents per share, surpassing analysts’ expectations of 43 cents per share.
AI Catalyzes Growth in Licensing and Royalties
The burgeoning demand for Arm’s chip architecture is a direct consequence of the rapid proliferation of AI computing, particularly in data centers where cloud providers are deploying specialized processors.
Prominent technology entities such as Alphabet and Amazon are increasingly developing proprietary AI chips grounded in Arm’s architecture, propelling growth in both licensing and royalty revenues as a greater number of advanced chips hit the market.
During the first quarter, Arm’s royalty revenue surged by 22% year-on-year to $715 million, while licensing revenue escalated by 23% to $574 million.
The company also reported first-quarter revenue of $1.29 billion and adjusted earnings of 45 cents per share, significantly outpacing analysts’ projections of $1.26 billion in revenue and 40 cents per share in adjusted earnings.
Smartphone Weakness Affects Investor Sentiment
Despite the promising outlook for AI, investor sentiment soured following Arm’s indication that growth in smartphone royalties would decelerate in the current quarter.
Reuters reported that the company anticipates smartphone royalty growth between 10% and 15%, with management attributing this to memory shortages hampering handset production.
A sequential decline in smartphone royalties is anticipated in the next quarter, further affecting share prices post-announcement.
Finance Chief Jason Child remarked that the company’s overall expenditure plans and financial outlook remain steadfast, even amidst this temporary lull in the smartphone sector.
Data Center Business Gathers Momentum
Arm is experiencing swift advancement within the data center market, where AI workloads are driving the demand for energy-efficient processors.
The company disclosed that it has dispatched 1.5 billion Arm cores for data centers over the past six years, with approximately 30% of those shipments occurring within the last nine months—illustrating the accelerating deployment of AI infrastructure.
Growing inference workloads, where AI models generate responses to user inquiries, are escalating the demand for central processing units, complementing graphics processors utilized for AI training.
Moreover, Arm has broadened its strategy by creating its own data center CPU, moving beyond its conventional licensing business model.
New AI Chip Gains Traction
Arm’s AGI CPU, which debuted earlier this year, is exceeding initial performance expectations.
The company noted that customer demand for this processor now surpasses $2 billion across fiscal years 2027 and 2028, with the product already shipped to various clients.
Oracle has committed to purchasing the new chip, as reported by Reuters, although the details of this agreement have not been disclosed.
Additionally, Arm has confirmed that it has secured sufficient manufacturing capacity to support over $1 billion worth of chip shipments, indicative of enhanced production capabilities.
Analysts Maintain Optimism
While Arm has sustained its long-term outlook, analysts from Jefferies project that sales from the company’s new chip could soar to $18 billion by fiscal 2031, outstripping Arm’s own forecast of $15 billion.

Management did not alter its long-term projections during the earnings announcement, yet the continued resilience in AI infrastructure spending suggests that Arm is poised to benefit from the escalating demand for power-efficient processors vital for cloud computing and next-generation AI applications.
