For many iPhone owners, purchasing the device outright remains a financial burden. Instead, a significant number choose to pay off their devices incrementally.
In a recent development, Apple has unveiled a novel financing option aimed at incentivizing timely payments, coinciding with enhancements to its iOS platform.
Nearly two decades ago, Apple transformed the landscape of telecommunications with the inception of the iPhone in 2007.
The initial model was priced between $499 and $599, offering either 4 or 8 GB of storage—substantial sums at that time, which still resonate today.
As of 2023, approximately 55% of iPhone users opted for installment payments, in contrast to 38% who paid the total amount upfront.
The majority of those financing options are through mobile carriers, although Apple has also provided its installment plans. Recently, the corporation announced a partnership with Klarna, introducing a lease-to-own model termed “Apple Upgrade.”
This program will offer consumers a method to disperse payments over a period of two years for iPhones and Apple Watches, with iPads and Macs extending to a three-year repayment schedule.
This initiative resembles car leasing, introducing additional constraints should customers choose to retain their devices after the term without upgrading.
Systematic Restrictions on Devices for Non-compliance
According to findings by 9to5Mac, an examination of the iOS 27 beta reveals provisions for “App Managed Features.” This functionality empowers authorized financing apps to monitor the payment status of enrolled iPhones.
Connected to this is a “Restricted Mode,” which may be activated if a user is delinquent in their contractual obligations. This mode restricts access to several applications, including:
- Accessibility Reader
- App Store
- Health
- Magnifier
- Phone
- Clock
- Settings
- Wallet
- Passwords
Notably, Messages is not included in this restricted list. It is important to note that users could potentially incur costs for app subscriptions that become inaccessible unless manually canceled.
Moreover, the precise criteria for invoking Restricted Mode remain ambiguous, as it could theoretically be triggered by a single missed payment.

It remains uncertain whether these restrictions will pertain solely to customers using the Apple Upgrade program or if they will also affect carrier-based financing plans. Users are advised to remain vigilant regarding their payment obligations.
