FTC Initiates Investigation into AI Chatbots Over Child Safety Concerns

In a unanimous decision, the commission voted to launch this study, which, while lacking an explicit law enforcement purpose, may serve as a precursor to future regulatory initiatives.

This probe emerges amid the growing sophistication and popularity of AI chatbots, igniting concerns over their psychological impacts on vulnerable populations, particularly youth.

Last month, the parents of 16-year-old Adam Raine, who tragically died by suicide in April, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI. They allege that ChatGPT provided their son with detailed guidance on how to execute the act.

In response to the lawsuit, OpenAI announced its ongoing efforts to implement corrective measures for its leading chatbot. The San Francisco-based firm noted that extended interactions with ChatGPT had revealed a troubling trend: the chatbot often failed to consistently recommend contacting mental health services when users expressed suicidal ideation.
