Significant Decline in SpaceX and Tesla Shares After Midterm Elections
On Thursday, shares of SpaceX and Tesla, both under the aegis of Elon Musk, experienced a precipitous decline as technology and artificial intelligence (AI) stocks were engulfed by a substantial sell-off in the wake of the recent U.S. midterm elections.
This market reaction stemmed from investor apprehensions regarding the potential ramifications of the Democrats’ electoral victories, which may usher in heightened regulatory scrutiny of the AI sector and impede the expansion of data centers.
Specifically, SpaceX shares plummeted by approximately 8%, while Tesla endured a nearly 11% loss, reflecting apprehension about prospective regulatory challenges for enterprises heavily invested in AI infrastructure.
The Democrats’ success in pivotal states, including Texas, has intensified concerns about increased political resistance to new data center initiatives.
The technology-centric Nasdaq Composite index suffered a decline of 5.5%, erasing about $2.5 trillion in market capitalization and entering correction territory.
Concurrently, the S&P 500 fell by 4.4%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average witnessed a drop exceeding 3.4%, marking one of the most unfavorable trading sessions for U.S. markets since April 2025.
Among the sectors most adversely affected were semiconductor manufacturers. Shares of Nvidia experienced a downturn exceeding 9%, while Advanced Micro Devices and Micron recorded losses surpassing 17%.
Intel also faced a steep decline, contributing to over a 12% drop in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, which tracks major semiconductor firms.
Investor concerns are mounting that Democratic dominance in Congress could result in more stringent regulations, elongated construction approval processes, and limitations on the rapid proliferation of data centers.
These facilities are integral to the advancement of AI technologies yet have encountered mounting opposition due to their substantial energy and water demands, alongside their ramifications for local communities.
Texas has emerged as a focal point of concern for the technology sector. Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa has actively campaigned against the unbridled proliferation of data centers, vowing to halt new construction approvals until more robust safeguards are established.
Musk’s significant financial backing of Republican candidates during the election cycle, amounting to approximately $450 million, particularly in Texas, adds a layer of uncertainty to his enterprises following the Democrats’ electoral successes.
This has fostered a more complex landscape for his companies, which have made considerable investments in the Lone Star State.
The market’s downturn also mirrors broader investor trepidations regarding whether the vast investments in artificial intelligence will yield adequate returns.

Analysts have cautioned that a deceleration in data center development could adversely impact chip manufacturers, technology firms, infrastructure providers, and other entities intertwined with the AI ecosystem.
The market’s abrupt reversal followed a robust rally on Wednesday, where initial reactions to the election results were favorable.
However, renewed worries surrounding AI expenditures, infrastructure development, and potential regulatory modifications swiftly negated those gains.
This significant drop underscores the transformative impact of the evolving political milieu in Washington on the trajectory of the technology sector, particularly for companies whose growth ambitions hinge on the swift expansion of AI-related infrastructure.
