Samsung Electronics has set its sights on Japan’s burgeoning character merchandise and entertainment landscape, leveraging cutting-edge glasses-free 3D displays.
This initiative aims to amplify its commercial signage business as retailers strategize to captivate fans and encourage prolonged in-store experiences.
At the Tokyo Game Show 2026, hosted at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan, the South Korean technology titan unveiled its Spatial Signage displays within NC’s booth, showcasing characters from the anticipated mobile game title, Astrae Oratio.
This endeavor taps into Japan’s “oshikatsu” culture, wherein ardent fans commit time and resources to support beloved characters, celebrities, and notable figures.
For Samsung, character-focused stores and ephemeral shops signify an opportunity to extend its display solutions beyond traditional advertising mediums.
The diverse retail environment in Japan, from anime shops in Akihabara to the Pokemon Center and Nintendo Tokyo in Shibuya, presents fertile ground for character encounters, enhancing merchandise sales.
Samsung is positioning its innovative technology as a medium to seamlessly integrate these interactions within spatially constrained stores.
Spatial Signage employs Samsung’s proprietary 3D Plate technology, which cultivates a vivid sense of depth devoid of the necessity for specialized eyewear.
This technique enables characters and backgrounds to visually extend beyond the confines of the screen, as professed by the company.
At NC’s booth entrance, a striking 85-inch vertically installed display depicted a character emerging as faux elevator doors slid open, establishing eye contact and gesturing towards visitors. This presentation mimicked a close encounter with an individual standing within a confined space.
Alongside the visitor path, smaller 32-inch displays were strategically positioned, showcasing characters who greeted attendees with a variety of gestures and expressions, thus enhancing the atmosphere in the booth’s waiting areas.
“Our objective was to transcend mere visual storytelling of our new title, crafting experiences where visitors organically connect with its characters upon entering the booth,” remarked a representative from NC.
“The astonishing depth provided by Spatial Signage facilitated the conversion of the mobile game’s graphics and cinematic elements into an enriched, immersive offline experience.”
The representative noted that a greater number of passersby lingered at the booth, which subsequently transformed the waiting area into a favored photo opportunity.
For Samsung, the commercial proposition hinges on both the visual allure and the spatial efficiency required for implementation.
The company asserts that conventional 3D displays often present challenges in accommodating bulky enclosures, particularly in densely populated shopping districts like Tokyo, where retailers grapple with limited floor space and exorbitant rents.
The 85-inch model boasts a thickness of 52 millimeters and weighs 49 kilograms, making it compatible with VESA-standard mounts for wall or stand installation.
Additionally, the 32-inch version measures 49.4 mm in thickness and weighs a mere 8.5 kg, thereby ideal for placement on shelves and within narrow corridors.

Samsung asserts that these dimensions enable retailers to incorporate 3D displays into existing walls and waiting areas without necessitating significant layout overhauls.
The Tokyo exhibition follows a series of installations at notable venues including Everland’s Safari World in South Korea, the Governors Ball Music Festival in the United States, and Gamescom 2026 in Germany.
These deployments exemplify Samsung’s commitment to diversifying the application of its technology across retail and entertainment sectors.
The company emphasizes leveraging character content to attract attention, foster prolonged visits, and stimulate social media engagement.
The NC exhibit illustrated how these displays could transcend mere promotional functions at store entrances or advertising walls.
By integrating screens along the visitor route, Samsung and NC transformed otherwise utilitarian waiting areas into additional opportunities for engagement with the game and its characters.
