The Philippine Institute of Cyber Security Professionals (PiCSPro) has emphasized the urgent need for a thorough examination of potential online influences affecting youth in the wake of the harrowing shooting at Banga National High School in South Cotabato, marking the latest episode in a disturbing trend of school shootings across the nation.
In a heartfelt statement, PiCSPro Chairman and Founding President Angel T. Redoble expressed profound sorrow for the students lost and extended condolences to their families, friends, educators, and the broader school community.
The Banga Incident
The tragic event on September 18 resulted in the deaths of two students and the teenage shooter, with at least eight others injured, as reported by local law enforcement and government officials. Authorities are currently probing how the gunman managed to procure and smuggle the weapon into the educational institution.
South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo Tamayo Jr. has called upon the Department of Information and Communications Technology and the Philippine National Police’s Anti-Cybercrime Group to investigate an online community allegedly associated with the shooter, aiming to uncover any connections to the violent act.

PiCSPro underscored that this incident is part of a broader pattern of violent occurrences involving students and educational settings.
The organization voiced serious apprehensions regarding “online radicalization, cyber-enabled cognitive grooming, violent digital communities, and other manipulative practices targeting impressionable youth.”
“While investigations should reveal the facts, reports of potential online influences serve as a reminder that digital environments can significantly manipulate behavior, beliefs, and interpersonal relationships in ways that may elude adult comprehension,” PiCSPro articulated.
The institute urged that responsibility must be collectively shouldered by parents, educational institutions, technology providers, law enforcement entities, and government bodies to identify critical warning signs and combat detrimental online networks.
Shared Responsibility for Prevention
Highlighting the necessity for collective action, PiCSPro argued that parents must not bear the burden alone; schools are encouraged to enhance their capability to identify warning signs, and online platforms should fortify protective measures for minors.
This statement emerges in the wake of two other fatal school shootings earlier this year.
Previous Incidents in 2023
On August 18, an incident at Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Zamboanga City led to the deaths of two students, including the identified shooter, while another individual sustained injuries. Authorities reported that the event was broadcast live on social media, prompting a formal investigation.
Earlier, on June 22, three students were killed, and 11 more were injured during a shooting at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City.
Police apprehended two minors connected to the tragedy, revealing that the victims were shot from a distance, with legal proceedings initiated against one of the suspects.
Call to Action
PiCSPro contended that averting such tragedies necessitates proactive measures before warning signs escalate into violent outbreaks.
“Prevention must be initiated prior to the warning signs evolving into news headlines,” the organization asserted, reiterating its dedication to promoting cybersecurity awareness, fostering digital resilience, early intervention, and safeguarding children in both physical and virtual realms.
