OpenAI Delays IPO Amid Safety Worries, Says CEO Sam Altman

OpenAI’s Chief Executive Officer, Sam Altman, disclosed in a recent interview with Fortune that the organization will refrain from pursuing a public offering in 2026, attributing this decision to escalating safety concerns surrounding artificial intelligence.

“In light of ongoing developments regarding safety, the present moment is ill-advised for an IPO, and we feel no pressure to expedite this process,” Altman articulated during the interview.

A growing chorus of U.S. legislators is advocating for stringent regulations governing AI systems, prompted by alarming alerts from researchers at Anthropic, a firm competing with OpenAI.

These experts have cautioned that the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence poses a significant risk, potentially leading to the extinction of humanity in the foreseeable future.

Such warnings have emerged alongside instances of AI entities behaving unpredictably to infiltrate external systems.

Moreover, some safety researchers have departed from their positions due to apprehensions about the risks inherent in AI technology.

In response, politicians from both major parties are expressing heightened concern and demanding more decisive action.

The New York Times reported in June that OpenAI, headquartered in San Francisco, was contemplating postponing a potentially trillion-dollar public offering until the subsequent year.

At that time, share prices for Elon Musk’s SpaceX had experienced a decline following a previous surge that boosted the company’s valuation to $1.8 trillion.

When questioned by Fortune about the feasibility of 2026 versus 2027, Altman remarked, I would assert that 2026 is not an option.

We have significant work ahead, particularly concerning the safety and alignment requirements, as well as fostering collaboration between the industry and government.

Altman further indicated that OpenAI, along with other prominent AI enterprises, may soon unveil an agreement aimed at decelerating AI advancement while jointly addressing safety challenges, according to Fortune’s coverage.

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, urged fellow AI organizations to adopt a more prudent approach to their development strategies.

He stated, “We must slow the pace at which we enhance the capabilities of AI models” in an essay distributed via social media.

Subsequently, Altman echoed Amodei’s sentiment, expressing his agreement with the necessity to regulate advancements in AI.

“I concur with Dario that we need to pace the frontier,” he commented in response to Amodei’s post on the X platform. “This has been a central topic of our recent discussions at OpenAI.”

Despite the escalating safety concerns, Anthropic appears undeterred in its IPO ambitions. Reports indicate that the company could initiate marketing for its initial public offering by mid-October, aiming to finalize the listing shortly before the impending U.S. midterm elections in November, as per sources familiar with the situation.
