Microsoft has announced impressive fourth-quarter financial results, with revenue soaring 18% year-over-year to reach $90 billion, and net income surged 31% to $35.8 billion, fueled by robust demand for its cloud and artificial intelligence solutions. Operating income also showed an 18% increase, totaling $40.6 billion.

Cloud and AI Propel Expansion

The Microsoft Cloud division generated an impressive $59.3 billion in revenue this quarter, reflecting a 27% year-over-year advancement. Furthermore, the company’s commercial remaining performance obligation—a crucial gauge of future contracted revenue—increased by 84%, amounting to $678 billion.

The Productivity and Business Processes segment recorded a 14% rise in revenue to $37.8 billion, whereas the Intelligent Cloud division experienced a striking 32% growth, reaching $39.3 billion. However, the More Personal Computing sector saw a 4% downturn, bringing in $12.9 billion.

Within the expansive cloud offering, Azure and ancillary cloud services witnessed a remarkable revenue increase of 43%. Microsoft 365 Consumer cloud revenue heightened by 24%, LinkedIn revenue saw a 12% escalation, and Dynamics 365 revenue advanced by 13% year-over-year.

“We concluded the fiscal year with a formidable quarter, highlighted by Microsoft Cloud revenue of $59.3 billion, reflecting a 27% year-over-year enhancement,” stated Amy Hood, the executive vice president and chief financial officer of Microsoft.

Search Advertising Exhibits Double-Digit Growth

Search advertising emerged as a lucrative segment within Microsoft’s consumer business, with revenue, excluding traffic acquisition costs, escalating 10% year-over-year, or 9% in constant currency. This growth occurred amidst declines in Windows OEM and Devices revenue by 7% and Xbox content and services revenue by 10%.

Sales and Marketing Expenditures Rise

During the quarter, Microsoft elevated its investment in sales and marketing, with expenses rising to $7.6 billion, compared to $7.3 billion in the same period last year.

For the entire fiscal year, sales and marketing expenditures increased to $26.7 billion, contrasting with $25.7 billion the previous year.

Research and development outlays also augmented to $10 billion during the quarter, up from $8.8 billion, while general and administrative expenses climbed to $2.3 billion from $2 billion.

The behemoth technology company noted that quarterly earnings benefited from a $3.2 billion gain on its investment in Anthropic and lower-than-anticipated costs tied to its voluntary retirement program.

These gains were somewhat offset by severance expenses and impairment charges within its Xbox operations.

The firm clarified that its non-GAAP results exclude the ramifications of investments in OpenAI.

During the fourth quarter, Microsoft returned $10.2 billion to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases.
