Microsoft Expands Cloud Infrastructure with New Data Center in India
In a significant development, Microsoft has inaugurated its largest data center in India, augmenting its cloud infrastructure in Hyderabad.
This strategic move aligns with the tech titan’s eagerness to capitalize on the burgeoning demand for artificial intelligence services in one of the globe’s most expansive internet markets.
The newly unveiled India South Central facility, launched on Thursday, elevates Microsoft’s total number of cloud regions in the nation to four, complementing existing centers located in Pune, Chennai, and Mumbai.
Prominent early adopters of this facility include Adani Group and HDFC Bank, underscoring the escalating demand for cloud computing and AI infrastructure among leading Indian enterprises.
This expansion fortifies Microsoft’s stature as India’s preeminent cloud-computing provider, especially amid a landscape where competitors such as Alphabet and Amazon are also zealously ramping up their data center capacities throughout the country.
With a commitment exceeding $20.5 billion towards enhancing its operations in India, Microsoft targets a vast demographic of over 1 billion internet users, bolstered by one of the world’s most substantial pools of technological talent.
The company has reported that its Azure cloud division has achieved double-digit revenue growth in India for two consecutive years.
In collaboration with the telecommunications and technology powerhouse Jio—controlled by billionaire Mukesh Ambani—Microsoft also manages two additional data centers in India.
“To generate value with AI, it necessitates reliable infrastructure located proximally to data storage, operational teams, and decision-making loci,” stated Puneet Chandok, Microsoft India President, emphasizing the significance of this new facility in the broader infrastructure landscape.
This expansion arrives as India emerges as a pivotal arena within the global AI sector. The country’s vast population of internet users, a rapidly evolving digital economy, and extensive technology workforce have attracted monumental investments from some of the world’s leading tech corporations.
Alphabet and Amazon are similarly investing heavily in data center infrastructure, vying for businesses and consumers poised to leverage increasingly potent AI services.
However, the swift proliferation of data centers has elicited environmental apprehensions. Activist groups have accused Indian authorities of hastily expediting plans for a Google data center hub without thoroughly assessing possible ramifications on water resources and wildlife. The government has firmly denied these allegations.
Microsoft’s latest data center epitomizes the magnitude of the ongoing infrastructure race in India, where access to computing capability is progressively vital as enterprises escalate their utilization of AI technologies.
