AWS Struggles to Restore Cloud Services Amid Iranian Strikes

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced its inability to restore access to certain cloud computing facilities in the Middle East, a situation exacerbated by recent strikes carried out by Iran.

In a status update released on Tuesday, AWS disclosed that one of its cloud-computing facilities located in Bahrain, along with one of its three data-hosting zones in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), suffered considerable damage during the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Consequently, the restoration of access to these critical facilities remains unfeasible.

The infrastructure damage in Bahrain has impacted multiple availability zones, surpassing the resilience thresholds that AWS’s regional systems were engineered to endure.

“The damage to our infrastructure spanned multiple Availability Zones and exceeded what our regional and multi-AZ services are designed to withstand,” the statement read.

An availability zone denotes a cluster of one or more data centres situated within the same geographical region. AWS leverages these clusters to ensure service continuity even in the event of a site failure.

The company has committed to assisting its Bahrain-based clients in re-establishing their operations in alternative regions while reaffirming its dedication to customers across both nations.

In the UAE, AWS acknowledged its inability to restore access to resources and data housed solely in one availability zone, designated as mec1-az2.

Recovery operations are ongoing within the broader UAE region and other impacted zones. AWS indicated that many of the customers affected had successfully resumed operations in different regions after migrating workloads or recovering backups.

Iran’s Military Actions Against AWS Facilities

Reports indicate that AWS is in the process of replacing the damaged infrastructure in the UAE, with plans to provide a comprehensive update on restoration efforts in the coming months. For Bahrain, the company mentioned it would release further details in early 2027.

The disruptions to AWS’s services began in March, following coordinated US and Israeli military actions against Iran.

This escalation was met with Iranian missile and drone strikes targeting Israel and Gulf states that accommodate US military installations.

During this tumultuous period, AWS confirmed that two of its facilities in the UAE were directly impacted, while a drone strike adjacent to one of its facilities in Bahrain inflicted structural damage.

Upon the initial availability zone damage in Bahrain in March, AWS promptly began advising its customers to transfer workloads to other regions.

Most clients adhered to this recommendation prior to the Bahrain region’s unavailability, which arose following the disruption of a second availability zone in April.

In July, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran alleged that it had successfully targeted and destroyed AWS’s central data infrastructure in Bahrain with cruise missiles; however, Amazon, the Bahraini authorities, and US officials have yet to validate this claim regarding the facilities.

AWS is not alone in facing attacks; during the ongoing conflict, Tehran also asserted its involvement in striking an Oracle facility in April, a claim that Oracle has refrained from confirming.

Furthermore, the IRGC has threatened to target up to 29 regional technology company sites across the Middle East, which include giants such as Google, Nvidia, Microsoft, and Palantir.
