Dedicated Apple enthusiasts have yearned for the introduction of a foldable iPhone for an extended period. Each year, conjectures abound, yet they either dissipate into ambiguity or are postponed.
However, recent indicators from Apple’s supply chain insinuate that while the iPhone Fold may be unveiled during the company’s September 2026 event, actual availability to consumers might not transpire until early 2027.
This marks yet another delay for the anticipated device, and based on prior experiences, it is unlikely to be the final postponement.
Insights from the Supply Chain
Two distinct entities closely associated with Apple’s production have provided hints converging towards the same conclusion.
The CEO of Largan Precision, a pivotal supplier of camera lenses for iPhones, informed stakeholders that a selection of new product opportunities will be revealed in the third quarter of 2026, while others may be deferred to the outset of the following year.
He also mentioned that the fourth quarter of 2026 is expected to experience heightened activity due to the scheduling of clients’ new devices.
In a separate development, the general manager of Xinrixing, a company speculated to manufacture bearings for the foldable iPhone, remarked that his enterprise is merely awaiting Apple’s directive on a shipping date. This assertion is revealing: the components are primed, yet the pivotal decision rests with Apple.
Collectively, these two firms represent disparate facets of the device. One specializes in lenses; the other in bearings. The simultaneous discussion of a shared product within an aligned timeframe renders these insights difficult to dismiss.
A Pattern of Delays
To provide context, speculation surrounding the iPhone Fold has been prevalent since 2019, the year Samsung unveiled its inaugural foldable device.
Since that time, annual predictions from the supply chain or analyst factions have anticipated an Apple foldable. Yet, each year has yielded disappointment.
This year, though, appears to carry a different cadence. There has been an uptick in reports, more exhaustive component leaks, and decidedly clearer timelines than in preceding years.
Notably, Apple’s beta versions of iOS 27 and macOS 27 have seemingly hinted at initial support for foldable technology. Furthermore, there have been indications that manufacturing trials commenced earlier this year.
Nonetheless, the prevailing rumors maintain an air of contradiction. For instance, reports from April 2026 suggested that Apple would announce the iPhone Fold come September, with shipping poised to begin in October—potentially in limited quantities reminiscent of the original AirPods.
Conversely, other accounts indicated that production complications could delay the entire project until 2027.
The scarcity of significant component leaks as September approaches has also garnered scrutiny. Generally, when a new iPhone nears launch, components begin surfacing; such has not been the case with the Fold.
Future Expectations
Apple is anticipated to pursue additional foldable models beyond the inaugural iPhone Fold. Reports indicate plans for at least one more folding variant in 2027 and 2028, possibly featuring a bezel-less design or a clamshell form.
Therefore, even if the initial Fold’s release extends into early 2027, it is poised to initiate a broader movement rather than serve as a solitary trial.
