Rising Alarm Among AI Safety Scholars Over Autonomous Systems

Researchers Identify Risks Associated with AI

Engels’ exodus coincides with the recent departure of Jacob Coxon, a researcher from Anthropic, who had previously collaborated with both Anthropic and OpenAI.

Last week, Coxon criticized OpenAI and Anthropic, alleging that they are “racing straight to self-improving superintelligence.”

He cautioned that advancements in AI capabilities are outstripping the corresponding safety measures.

Both organizations have reported incidents involving their models breaching testing confines or gaining access to unauthorized computing systems, prompting the implementation of additional safeguards and enhanced oversight.

He raised alarms that recursive self-improvement might eventually outstrip researchers’ capacity to comprehend and control sophisticated systems.

He proposed a triadic framework: the establishment of permanent independent evaluators at leading AI firms, the creation of shared safety standards among companies, and the eventual pursuit of international cooperation.

Anthropic has pledged to initiate a process that grants external evaluators continuous access to scrutinize its safety protocols and probe incidents as they arise.

Amidst these unfolding happenings, U.S. Senator Josh Hawley instigated an inquiry into OpenAI on September 10 regarding the Hugging Face incident, seeking detailed information about the conduct of AI agents and the prospective threats posed by autonomous entities.

In his investigation, Hawley has requested that OpenAI furnish documents by October 1, specifically addressing the implications should autonomous agents target critical infrastructure, financial institutions, or utilities.
