Google Expands AI Access to Rivals Amidst Internal Strategy Shift
Google has strategically developed Gemini as the cornerstone of its artificial intelligence initiative. However, the company is now broadening its internal engineers’ access to Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5, which represents a competing model.
According to Business Insider, which reported on the matter citing informed sources, Google has opened up access to Claude for coding within its Antigravity development platform.
A representative from Google confirmed that select third-party models can now be utilized alongside Gemini for specialized tasks.
This pivot does not imply that Google is relinquishing its commitment to Gemini. Access to Claude is regulated by quotas and is primarily routed through the Antigravity platform, while the company continues to advocate for Gemini as its principal model in internal development projects.
This decision signifies a departure from Google’s previous policy, which generally curtailed employee use of external coding tools such as Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex.
Prior access had been reserved for certain teams within Google DeepMind and select high-priority engineering initiatives.
Nonetheless, unrestricted access to Claude Code is not being granted. Rather, Claude is integrated into Antigravity and is subject to individual usage limitations.
“Engineers have access to select third-party models in Antigravity, consistent with our external Antigravity enterprise offering,” stated a Google spokesperson, as reported by Business Insider.
“Gemini remains our foundational model for internal development, with third-party models accessible on a quota basis to support specialized use cases.”
Coding Pressures Mount
This change occurs at a time when AI-driven coding has emerged as one of the most fiercely competitive segments within the industry.
Both Anthropic and OpenAI have garnered significant attention for their coding capabilities, while some engineers at Google have reportedly expressed frustrations regarding Gemini’s efficacy on complex programming tasks.
