Apple’s newly introduced leasing initiative offers reduced monthly payments alongside an extensive selection of devices, potentially leading consumers to consider iPhones and Macs as subscription services.

In response to surging electronics prices and protracted device lifecycles, Apple is set to unveil a leasing program designed to enhance affordability for iPhones, Macs, and various other products.

In collaboration with the payment platform Klarna, this program will become available in the United States starting Tuesday, accessible via retail locations, online, and the Apple Store application.

Users can lease iPhones and Apple Watches for 12 or 24 months and opt for 24 or 36-month terms for Macs and iPads.

Leasing Terms and Available Products

The following devices are eligible for leasing:

Notably, budget-friendly products such as the iPhone 16, MacBook Neo, basic iPad, and Apple Watch SE are excluded from this initiative.

This leasing program supersedes the previous iPhone Upgrade program, which permitted users to trade in their devices after 12 months of payments.

The new model expands the scope, accommodating a broader array of Apple products while offering increased payment flexibility and lower monthly fees.

The minimum monthly payment for iPhone leasing is set at $17.99, a stark contrast to the iPhone Upgrade program’s starting point of approximately $42.

Industry analysts contend that this shift may lead consumers to perceive the iPhone or Mac more as subscription services rather than singular purchases.

Francisco Jeronimo indicates that the average user retains their mobile device for around 22 months.

We should start thinking of the iPhone at $1,500 instead of $1,000 (or) $1,200.

Forecasts suggest that upcoming iPhone iterations may exhibit further price increases. Just last month, Apple elevated the prices of several Mac and iPad models, attributing the hikes to sustained memory shortages and growing demand for data center chips.

The real risk for Apple is that further price increases could affect the upgrade cycle.

“Apple Upgrade appears exactly when Apple needs it,” remarked Mike Howard.

This leasing initiative is strategically timed with the anticipated September release of new iPhones, including the potential debut of the most expensive smartphone in history — a foldable iPhone.

The introduction of leasing signifies Apple’s commitment to enhancing product accessibility and user experience, reflecting a broader trend toward financing models akin to subscriptions with more adaptable terms in the near future.
