NORTH CAROLINA: The Evolving Landscape of AI in Education and Employment
As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly ubiquitous in both educational institutions and professional environments, the ramifications on career trajectories and workforce requirements are coming to the fore, capturing the attention of educators, students, and employers alike.
Although the precise impact of AI on employment remains ambiguous, recent studies indicate that the technology is already shaping students’ academic pursuits and influencing corporate hiring strategies.
“Public and civic education is of paramount importance,” remarked Joi Hester, a junior at North Carolina State University majoring in world languages and culture with a minor in biology.
Opinions regarding AI are not monolithic, as Hester elucidates: “It really depends on the student in question, particularly their field of study and educational level.”
The Lumina Foundation-Gallup 2026 State of Higher Education Study reveals that 13% of bachelor’s degree candidates have seriously contemplated altering their major due to AI, while 29% have considered it to a considerable extent.
Hester explains, “Currently, there is an expectation of some job displacement; however, the situation is not as straightforward as merely automating tasks.”
The survey further found that 16% of enrolled college students have already switched majors or fields of study due to apprehensions surrounding AI’s implications for future employment.
One significant concern Hester raised is the potential reduction in workforce needs as AI assumes the responsibilities of routine tasks.
“A major negative consequence is that, if AI requires human oversight rather than carrying out tasks independently, the workforce will shrink. Fewer individuals may enter the job market.
Companies may prefer to recruit those who are well-versed in advanced technologies, reducing the need for new hires unfamiliar with rapidly evolving landscapes,” Hester elaborated.
Nonetheless, humanities programs continue to confer indispensable advantages, according to Hester.
“Those of us in disciplines perceived as vulnerable to AI might find ourselves more competitive, as we can offer insights beyond a language model’s typical responses, applying our critical thought processes instead,” Hester stated.
She disclosed that she utilizes AI only when required as part of her curriculum, maintaining: “Acquiring a diverse skill set will always be valuable, yet it feels rather discouraging to believe that we must adapt to these technologies merely to remain competitive in the job market.”
Simultaneously, AI’s brisk expansion is generating a robust demand in sectors such as construction and infrastructure.
This surge of artificial intelligence has catalyzed an upsurge in the development of data centers across the nation, escalating the necessity for skilled laborers to construct and maintain these facilities.
“Data centers are distinctive entities that encompass both commercial and industrial components,” observed Joel Thames, Vice President of Environment, Health, Safety, and Workforce Development at Associated Builders and Contractors, a national construction trade association.
Recently, the organization aligned with Meta in an initiative known as America’s Workforce Academy, through which Meta is investing $115 million to prepare laborers for AI infrastructure and other construction-related roles.
“Upon announcing this partnership, we received an overwhelming influx of applications,” Thames reported.
This initiative comes at a time when the construction industry grapples with notable labor shortages, with the trade group projecting a need for 456,000 additional workers in the upcoming year to satisfy anticipated demand.
“The overarching objective of America’s Workforce Academy is to ensure that once these individuals gain initial employment and acclimatize to the construction environment, we can subsequently enroll them in more comprehensive training programs,” Thames explained.
Demand is particularly pronounced for professionals involved in data center construction, as contractors report substantial backlogs compared to other segments of the industry.
“The likelihood of these workers remaining with the same contractor and continuing in this line of work is notably high. We anticipate that this will foster numerous growth opportunities,” stated Thames.
He also noted potential for long-term employment on-site.
“These facilities necessitate a considerable degree of maintenance,” Thames added. “ABC encompasses over 20,000 contractors nationwide, many of whom also operate within the maintenance sector. The promising aspect of this AI expansion is that it is projected to last for many years.”
Beyond this, Thames indicated various ancillary businesses could also experience indirect growth as a result of these initiatives.
“Even Home Depot, although they may not employ those workers directly, recognizes that increased interest in trades and construction will inevitably benefit their business through heightened sales of materials and tools,” he elucidated.
The proliferation of data centers has sparked vigorous debate among local governments in North Carolina.
Some communities are deliberating moratoriums or developmental pauses, while others enthusiastically embrace these projects.
Proponents cite job creation and local investment as advantages, whereas critics express concerns regarding environmental repercussions, utility consumption, and the veracity of long-term employment statistics.
