Strategic Collaborations to Enhance INEC’s Technological Framework for 2027 Elections
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, has initiated critical dialogues with Microsoft, Google, and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) to fortify the Commission’s technological infrastructure in anticipation of the forthcoming general elections in 2027.
Engaging with senior representatives from these tech giants and IFES occurred during the Global Conference on Responsible AI and Elections held in Ottawa, Canada.
This gathering convened election management bodies, technology connoisseurs, and international organizations to scrutinize both the potential and pitfalls that artificial intelligence presents within electoral frameworks.
Accompanied by Dr. Lawrence Bayode, the Commission’s Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Amupitan initially conferred with Microsoft’s Emerging Tech and Cyber Lead, Ethan Chumley, alongside Programme Manager Ariana Molina.

Their deliberations concentrated on the exploration of nascent technologies, cybersecurity concerns, and the judicious implementation of artificial intelligence aimed at bolstering the integrity and resilience of electoral processes.
In a related session, Amupitan engaged with Dr. Lisa Poggiali, Chief AI Advisor at IFES, where they discussed the ethical application of AI in electoral management and the integration of best practices from other democracies to enhance INEC’s operations.
Furthermore, a productive meeting took place with David J. Lopez, Google’s Global Lead for Civic Responsibility, within the same Ottawa venue on Friday.
This dialogue was part of the intensive three-day conference, running from September 9 to 11, which addressed various aspects of technology and the role of AI in electoral processes.
During the conference, Amupitan also articulated Nigeria’s advancements in embedding responsible AI into electoral administration.
INEC has emphasized that these strategic partnerships with eminent technology and electoral organizations are instrumental in augmenting the Commission’s ability to navigate new technological challenges and prospects effectively.
The Commission stated that these collaborations would significantly contribute to enhancing the security, resiliency, transparency, and efficacy of Nigeria’s electoral system in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
The Global Conference on Responsible AI and Elections served as a platform for election management bodies, technology specialists, and international entities to explore the ramifications of AI on electoral integrity, advocating for responsible methodologies in its deployment.
