Meta Suspends Access to AI Characters for Teens
Meta Platforms Inc. has announced a temporary cessation of access to artificial intelligence characters for users classified as minors, as detailed in a blog post released on Friday.
Beginning in the forthcoming weeks, teenagers will be barred from utilizing these AI characters “until an updated experience is ready.”
This decision affects all individuals who registered birthdays indicating they are minors, along with users who inaccurately claim to be adults but are categorized as teens by Meta’s age prediction technology.
This announcement comes just ahead of a trial in Los Angeles, where Meta, alongside TikTok and YouTube, is set to be scrutinized for the potential harms its applications may impose on children.
Despite this development, adolescents will still retain access to Meta’s AI assistant, though they will be unable to utilize the character features.
Other tech companies have similarly restricted teen access to AI chatbots due to burgeoning concerns regarding the ramifications of artificial intelligence interactions on young users.

Notably, Character.AI implemented a ban last autumn and now faces multiple lawsuits addressing child safety issues—one such case involves a mother contending that the company’s chatbots led her son to suicide.
