Meta Platforms Acquires AI Startup Manus for Over $2 Billion
Meta Platforms has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Manus, a Singaporean artificial intelligence startup, with a valuation surpassing $2 billion.
This acquisition marks a significant step as it is one of the first major investments in an Asian-origin AI startup by a prominent American technology firm, signaling a strategic pivot towards the commercialization of autonomous AI agents.
The primary objective of this acquisition is to effectively bridge the divide between the development of foundational models and their practical applications in high-value enterprise contexts.
Through the assimilation of Manus, Meta Platforms will gain instant access to an established architecture adept at executing complex research and coding tasks with minimal human oversight.
“Joining Meta enables us to build upon a more robust and sustainable foundation without altering how Manus operates or how decisions are made,” states Xiao Hong, Chief Executive Officer of Manus.
Founded in 2022 by the parent company Butterfly Effect, Manus initially established research facilities in Beijing and Wuhan. Following a significant investment from Benchmark, the company relocated its headquarters to Singapore.
This geographic shift came after securing $75 million in a Series A funding round in April 2024, which positioned the company’s valuation at $500 million.
According to data referenced by The Wall Street Journal, Manus experienced rapid market penetration, boasting $100 million in annual recurring revenue within just eight months of its launch in March 2024.
The acquisition surfaces amidst fierce competition among tech giants, including Meta Platforms, Microsoft, and OpenAI, for supremacy in the AI agent domain. These sophisticated software tools possess the capability to autonomously navigate web environments, create customized websites, and generate technical reports.
Previously, Meta Platforms centered its AI strategy around open-source large language models like Llama. The acquisition of Manus indicates a shift toward a more diversified, subscription-based model focused on task-oriented software, aligning the company’s portfolio with established enterprise solutions such as Microsoft Copilot.
As outlined in the terms of the agreement, Manus will maintain its service for existing paying users while its technology is integrated into Meta’s extensive ecosystem. Hong will report directly to Javier Olivan, Chief Operating Officer of Meta Platforms.
This leadership framework has evolved following a recruitment initiative designed to bolster internal research capabilities, particularly after encountering developmental hurdles in early 2024.
The transaction encapsulates several key technical and financial metrics:
- Valuation Multiples: The valuation of $2 billion signifies a notable premium over Manus’ prior valuation of $500 million. This impressive growth is a result of the startup’s ability to harness models from entities such as Anthropic and Alibaba to execute complex, multi-step workflows.
- Geopolitical Reconfiguration: To navigate regulatory scrutiny concerning its Chinese origins, Manus has postponed plans for a domestic release in China and has consolidated its 100-employee workforce in Singapore.
- Personnel Integration: This acquisition follows Meta’s acquisition of a 49% stake in Scale AI, bringing Alexandr Wang, Scale AI’s Chief AI Officer, into a pivotal advisory position.

Market analysts project that this acquisition will expedite the deployment of business-to-business (B2B) tools by Meta Platforms. The integration is anticipated to broaden Manus’s user base through the utilization of Meta’s global infrastructure.
This strategic maneuver could establish a new industry standard for the cost-to-performance ratio of autonomous AI agents within the corporate landscape. Meta Platforms has articulated plans to expand this service to numerous businesses, particularly those leveraging WhatsApp and Instagram for commercial activities.
