At its much-anticipated September product launch, Apple introduced the iPhone 17 lineup, alongside refreshed digital watch models and AirPods.
This release marks a significant moment as it is the first under President Donald Trump’s administration, which has reinstated a series of tariffs aimed at coaxing manufacturing back to American shores, thereby placing Apple CEO Tim Cook under intense scrutiny.
Introduction of the iPhone 17 Series
The latest devices feature a substantial 6.3-inch display, propelled by the innovative A19 chip, enhancing Apple’s AI functionalities. Furthermore, the front camera now sports a wider field of view and employs a new sensor, enabling landscape photography without necessitating a phone rotation.
Despite these advancements, the devices continue to be manufactured mainly in Apple’s established hubs within China and India, a scenario that the Trump administration finds disconcerting.
Enhanced iPhone 17 Production in India
Hon Hai’s subsidiary, Foxconn, has commenced trial production at its new facility in Bengaluru, emerging as the largest iPhone manufacturing site in India based on installed production capacity.
Apple’s operations in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka encompass five factories, including Tata’s advanced unit in Hosur and Foxconn’s expansive 300-acre mega hub adjacent to Bengaluru airport, all dedicated to producing the latest iPhone models for international markets.

The product range includes the iPhone 17 Pro, assembled at Foxconn and Tata-managed Pegatron facilities, while the base model is produced at Tata’s Wistron plant in Karnataka and the new Hosur factory in Tamil Nadu. The iPhone Air, notable for its slender design, is exclusively manufactured by Foxconn in Sriperumbudur.
Much of the output is directed toward fulfilling demand in both the United States and Europe, as well as catering to India’s burgeoning smartphone market, as reported by Moneycontrol.
Approximately half of all iPhones sold in the United States are now produced in India. In a remarkable shift, India-manufactured models debuted on global shelves concurrently with their Chinese counterparts.
This evolution is reflected in trade statistics, which indicate that smartphone exports from India surged by 30% year-on-year in the first half of 2025, reaching 40 million units, predominantly driven by iPhones destined for the U.S.
