Greetings, I am Leonie Kidd, presenting today’s Morning Squawk edition.
Investors are faced with a dilemma today.
On one side, Apple’s downbeat margin forecast threatens to overshadow its impressive earnings, impacting the technology sector adversely.
Meanwhile, the oil markets are witnessing heightened activity, as crude prices surge following an unexpected military operation on Iran’s Qeshm Island.
And, notably, today marks midterm election day!
Current Status: Entering Correction Territory
Apprehension surrounding AI stocks is permeating Asian markets, particularly evident in the sharp downturn of the tech-centric South Korean and Taiwanese exchanges, along with substantial declines in chip stocks across Europe.
The Nasdaq-100 concluded the previous trading session firmly in correction territory, standing over 10% below its record high reached on October 6.
While futures remain stable, the dynamic shifts in oil markets combined with ongoing midterm voting suggest an unpredictable trading day ahead.
- Analysis: Futurum Group’s Daniel Newman told CNBC that the next phase of the AI sector is not contingent on earnings, asserting, A ceasefire could provide more momentum for AI investments this month than any earnings report.
A decrease in oil prices alleviates fears of a December rate hike and reduces capital expenses for enterprises developing data centers. - Upcoming: Squawk Box is set to converse with Pershing Square CEO Bill Ackman, who will share his insights regarding recent market fluctuations, noting that geopolitical tensions and inflation are undermining a potentially “thriving market environment.”
Major Disruptions: Apple Under Duress
Apple’s shares are experiencing downward pressure in premarket trading, as robust revenue figures fail to mitigate an underwhelming margin outlook.
Here are the key financial figures:
- EPS: $2.10 compared to the anticipated $1.99.
- Revenue: $114.48 billion versus a projection of $113.39 billion.
Despite commendable performance across its diverse product offerings, the iPhone manufacturer projects a gross margin of 45-46%, grappling with the current global memory chip shortage.
- Significance: According to CNBC’s Robert Hum, this is the first time in nearly four years that Apple has provided such foresight.
- Ternus’s Statement: Newly appointed CEO John Ternus expressed to CNBC’s MacKenzie Sigalos during the earnings call, “At this juncture, with all our accomplishments, it feels like we have never been more assured that the best is yet to come.”
- Revised Projections: Morgan Stanley has adjusted its Apple price target down to $350 from $355, while JPMorgan has lowered its estimate to $355 from $360.
Apple CEO John Ternus delivers a keynote during the Apple Experience LA event in Los Angeles, California, on October 28, 2026, unveiling new Mac computer models.
In Development: An Unexpected Assault
Iran has asserted its readiness to respond “with vigor” to U.S. military actions, following reported strikes on Qeshm Island.
A U.S. official disclosed to The Wall Street Journal that the U.S. has been executing “limited strikes” against Iran in recent weeks.
This military engagement has been deliberately understated to avoid signaling intentions for broader conflict escalation, as noted by an unnamed source.
- Context: The Trump administration has been tempering expectations of imminent conflict in the lead-up to the midterm elections, whilst Vice President JD Vance remarked on CNN that he is optimistic regarding “the potential for a negotiated agreement.”
- Significance: Developments in Iran are contributing to a rise in oil prices, crawling back from a notable decline observed on Monday.

North Korea Refutes Claims Tying It to Binance Cyber Heist
North Korea has firmly denied accusations linking it to the estimated $6.3 billion cyber breach of Binance, labeling the assertion as a “severe political provocation,” as reported by state media.
Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, vocally condemned the FBI’s assignment of blame directed towards a North Korea-associated hacking group known as TraderTraitor, as cited by Yohnap’s report on Tuesday, referencing the state-operated Korean Central News Agency.
Additionally, blockchain analytics firms including Elliptic and Chainalysis have associated the cybercrime and the ensuing movement of illicit funds with actors connected to North Korea.
