New Messaging Feature for ChatGPT’s Dot Agent
OpenAI has unveiled a new feature allowing select ChatGPT Pro subscribers to send text messages to their Dot agent, marking a significant enhancement in user interaction.
This service is currently available exclusively within the United States and operates through iMessage for iPhone users and RCS, the advanced successor to SMS, for Android users.
Dot, an innovative personal AI assistant, was launched in late September 2026. Notably, UK Pro subscribers are unable to access this texting feature, as Dot was not made available to them at the time of its introduction.
Feature Overview
Subscribers can conveniently communicate with Dot by sending text messages, images, and voice recordings, as well as assign various tasks.
Furthermore, Dot can initiate communication, providing progress updates on assigned tasks and alerts for monitored items.
To activate this feature, users need to navigate to the Dot profile in ChatGPT and select the Texting option.
iPhone users must ensure that iMessage is enabled, while Android users are required to have RCS. It is important to note that traditional SMS is not supported, as outlined in the OpenAI Help Center.
By popular request, you can now text your Dot. Delegate a task or request it to keep an eye on something through text, images, or voice notes.
Dot will proactively update you with pertinent information. Enjoy secure texting via iMessage or RCS. Communication is exclusive; only you can message Dot, and it will respond solely to you. Preview rollout is underway for Pro users in the US.

Only the account holder may initiate messages to Dot, which ensures that responses are sent solely to that individual.
The agent’s memory is synchronized across both ChatGPT and messaging threads, enabling continuity for tasks initiated in the app that carry over into discussions.
Privacy Considerations
It is noteworthy that OpenAI facilitates the messaging service through a partnership with Linq, which raises concerns regarding end-to-end encryption.
As reported by Techstrong, although OpenAI conducted penetration testing to identify possible security vulnerabilities, conversations are not entirely secure, as they pass through a third party.
Users are advised to exercise caution before transmitting sensitive information, such as passport details or financial data.
The feature also serves as a trial for agents capable of autonomously performing tasks. This initiative comes amid ongoing debates surrounding AI behavior; for instance, Wikimedia has raised concerns regarding AI agents purportedly affiliated with OpenAI editing its wikis, prompting questions about the degree of autonomy granted to such tools.
UK Subscriber Status
Reports indicate that Pro subscribers in the UK, as well as those in the EEA and Switzerland, have been excluded from the initial launch of Dot.
OpenAI has yet to announce a timeline for their inclusion in the feature rollout. Currently, Business Premium plans purportedly include access to Dots across all supported regions, with the UK being part of this group. However, this option comes at a higher cost compared to the standard Pro subscription.
It is crucial to note that the texting function remains a beta feature limited to the US, meaning that UK Business Premium users should not anticipate immediate availability.

Pricing for the Pro subscription has been reported variably, ranging from $100 to $200 per month; interested users are encouraged to consult OpenAI’s pricing page for confirmation.
Similarly, Anthropic is following a comparable US-centric approach with its Claude Duet, which is currently accessible through a waitlist. The remainder of the globe should expect to experience delays in accessing both services.
