Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Series Sees Year-on-Year Sales Growth

Recent insights from Counterpoint Research’s Smartphone Weekly Sales Tracker reveal that Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro series has achieved notable year-on-year sales growth in the initial three weeks post-launch.

Global sales of both the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max have risen by 3.1% year-on-year during this period, surpassing figures recorded for the iPhone 17 Pro series a year earlier.

A meticulous examination of regional sales dynamics indicates that this 3.1% global growth has been predominantly concentrated in select markets.

China emerged as the leading market, showcasing an impressive 29% year-on-year sales surge. This remarkable growth can be attributed to improved early supply chains compared to last year and price escalations by rival flagship models from Chinese Android manufacturers.

Notably, absent China’s input, the overall global sales growth trajectory would have been considerably less robust.

Conversely, both the United States and Japan reported a decline in year-on-year sales, a situation exacerbated by elevated pricing relative to preceding models.

American consumers, for instance, largely perceive negligible advancements in features or design, while Japanese demand has waned due to the adverse impacts of fluctuating exchange rates, which have intensified price increases.

Within the iPhone 18 Pro series, the iPhone 18 Pro Max accounted for 56% of total sales, marking a slight decline from 57% recorded the previous year.

This reduction is largely attributable to heightened price points compared to last year, coupled with the trend of emerging markets such as India and Southeast Asia gravitating towards Pro models.

Sujeong Lim, Associate Director at Counterpoint, remarked, The extent to which China’s impressive performance indicates sustainable demand or merely front-loaded purchases will become evident in the forthcoming weeks.

Additionally, the recovery trajectory of sales volumes in the US and Japan, alongside the anticipated launch of the iPhone Duo in Week 43, will be pivotal in determining whether it generates incremental demand or cannibalizes sales from the Pro Max.

Research Director Tarun Pathak elaborated: The regional reception of the iPhone 18 Pro series has been decidedly mixed.

We are closely monitoring weekly sales trends to evaluate demand sustainability once the typical post-launch surge subsides, as this will be instrumental for the holiday quarter.

This launch follows a robust sales performance of the iPhone 17 series last year. However, memory-driven price increases and prevailing macroeconomic uncertainties are notably elongating overall upgrade cycles.

Nevertheless, even modest sales growth is advantageous for Apple: it facilitates incremental enhancements to the Pro series and optimizes revenue distribution, in addition to robust pre-bookings for the iPhone Duo, where demand currently surpasses supply. Counterpoint Research
