In a disturbing turn of events, India’s smartphone market has encountered its most arduous third quarter in a decade, registering a dramatic decrease in shipments during the July-September period of 2026.

This troubling trend has been corroborated by esteemed market analysis entities, including Counterpoint Research and Omdia, casting a somber outlook on the world’s second-largest smartphone market.

Omdia Reports a 26% Decline in Shipments to 2016 Levels

Omdia, a prominent global technology research company, revealed last week that India’s smartphone shipments have plummeted by approximately 26% year-on-year in Q3 2026, amounting to 35.8 million units.

This figure represents the lowest shipment volume recorded for a third quarter since 2016. The firm identified several contributing factors to this precipitous decline: soaring smartphone prices, a conservative approach to consumer expenditure, and a downturn in online-centric shipments.

Furthermore, the delayed timing of Diwali festivities this year pushed a substantial portion of offline inventory accumulation from September into October, exacerbating the quarterly figures.

Brand performance reflected a significant reshuffle. Omdia noted that Samsung reclaimed its leading position for the first time since Q1 2024, with shipments totaling 6.7 million units and capturing approximately 19% of the market.

This resurgence was fueled by best-selling models such as the Galaxy A07, A17, A27, and the premium Galaxy S26 series, alongside the newly launched Z foldables and the S26 FE.

Vivo fell to second place with 6.4 million units, enduring a staggering 34% year-over-year decline, the steepest among the top five competitors.

OPPO secured third place with 4.9 million units (down 24% YoY), while Xiaomi followed closely at fourth with 4.7 million units (down 28% YoY). Completing the top five, Apple reported 3.9 million units, despite experiencing a 20% drop in shipments year-on-year.

Counterpoint Confirms a 20% Downturn, Budget Segment Most Affected

In alignment with the grim trend, Counterpoint Research’s latest Monthly India Smartphone Tracker disclosed a parallel 20% year-on-year contraction in smartphone shipments for Q3 2026.

This also marks an unprecedented low for third-quarter metrics in the past decade. Counterpoint attributes this downturn largely to an unprecedented rise in memory costs, which has sharply increased device prices.

Combined with persistently tepid demand, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) adopted a conservative approach regarding channel inventory in anticipation of the critical festive season.

Shubham Singh, a Research Analyst at Counterpoint, emphasized that the budget segment, particularly smartphones priced under ₹20,000, took the brunt of this contraction, experiencing an astonishing 47% plunge in shipments—especially acute in the sub-₹15,000 category.

Consumers are increasingly extending their replacement cycles and delaying upgrades, primarily due to financial constraints.

Counterpoint’s brand-wise analysis for Q3 2026 highlights Samsung’s emergence as the market leader after a hiatus of nine quarters, commanding a 17% market share.

Remarkably, Samsung was the sole brand among the top five to observe year-on-year growth, propelled by its Galaxy A series and a strategy involving prudent price increases.

Vivo, excluding iQOO, retained the second position with a 16% share, while OPPO achieved a 12% share, notably experiencing significant growth in the above-₹20,000 segment.

Xiaomi, which encompasses the Poco brand, also held a 12% market share, dominating the ₹10,001-₹20,000 price bracket.

Emerging Players and Projections for the Future

Despite the overarching market challenges, certain brands exhibited remarkable growth trajectories. Ai+ Smartphone emerged as the fastest-growing brand, boasting an astounding 306% year-on-year surge in shipments.

Collectively, Indian brands increased their market share from 2% in Q3 2025 to 7% in Q3 2026. Itel reported an 88% increase, while Google’s Pixel 11 devices contributed to over 50% year-on-year growth.

In the chipset domain, MediaTek maintained its leadership with a substantial 45% share, while Unisoc displayed a notable resurgence.

Looking ahead, the outlook remains precarious. Counterpoint Research predicts that India’s smartphone market will contract by approximately 13% throughout the entirety of 2026, with additional price escalations anticipated post-festive season.

Both research firms foresee a continuation of these challenges into 2027, as elevated prices and extended device replacement intervals surface as structural impediments.
