Concerns Arise Over iPhone Duo’s Display Durability

Apple’s inaugural foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, is confronting significant challenges shortly after its release.

Early reviews have highlighted a scarcity of applications optimized for its innovative book-style display.

However, a more urgent issue has emerged: users report cracks developing on the inner display adjacent to the hinge, sometimes within mere hours of usage.

Apple has now officially recognized this defect in its priciest device yet, which retails for approximately ₹3 lakh in India and about $2,000 in the United States.

Previously, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman noted that Apple was probing the dilemma without yet providing directives to retail locations or customer service representatives.

Recently, he conveyed that the company has now advised affected customers to reach out to AppleCare for replacement units.

“We acknowledge an issue affecting the inner display of a limited number of iPhone Duo units. Users experiencing display problems should reach out to AppleCare for a replacement,” stated Apple.

This announcement offers solace to affected individuals, considering the screen repair costs approximately half the device’s value—around ₹1.5 lakh in India and $999 in the US—without an active AppleCare+ plan.

Furthermore, in a communication with MacRumors, Apple confirmed its awareness of the inner display malfunction but refrained from detailing the underlying cause.

The reported screen damage incidents exhibit a recurrent pattern, with cracks appearing as a vertical line above the hinge, accompanied by horizontal lines extending towards the right side of the fold, ultimately converging just below the device’s midpoint.

Repair analysis entity iFixit posits that it has identified the root cause of the screen damage, attributing it to the hinge mechanism.

While suggesting that there may be multiple factors at play, the investigation focused on the screen’s curved fold interacting with the center bar, creating a localized stress point near the site of the reported fractures.
