Potential Mergers Spark Investor Optimism
NEW YORK — The annals of corporate mergers are replete with instances of failure; however, stakeholders in Tesla and SpaceX appear to harbor unwavering faith in Elon Musk’s ability to execute the most monumental consolidation in history, as reported by the Associated Press.
Following Musk’s announcement regarding the establishment of “special committees” for the purpose of exploring a potential union, shares of both enterprises experienced a significant upswing.
This proposed amalgamation could encapsulate a staggering valuation in the trillions, merging the preeminent provider of rocket launches and satellite internet with the world’s second-largest electric vehicle manufacturer.
Musk asserts that such a deal is logically sound given both companies’ burgeoning reliance on artificial intelligence.
They have already initiated collaborative efforts in AI chip fabrication, alongside ambitious albeit audacious plans to develop flying vehicles.
As trading progressed into the afternoon, SpaceX’s stock surged by 8%, while Tesla’s shares ascended by 3.5%.
At present market valuations, a merger would yield a colossal enterprise worth approximately $3.5 trillion. For context, the largest public company to date, chip manufacturing giant Nvidia, boasts a valuation of $5.2 trillion.
Speculation surrounding this union has circulated for months prior to Musk’s revelation during a conference call with financial analysts on Tuesday, where he disclosed the formation of dual committees to deliberate on the matter.
Musk clarified that, as the principal shareholder of both entities, he would not be privy to any discussions undertaken by these committees.
Currently, Musk owns 11% of SpaceX, maintaining majority voting rights, in addition to 19% of Tesla.
If this merger materializes, it would undeniably eclipse the long-standing record held by Vodafone AirTouch’s acquisition of Germany’s Mannesmann, which established a mobile telecommunications giant over 25 years ago.
During the analyst call, Musk posited that “copious benefits could be derived from collaborative efforts in superintelligence development,” a term he recently adopted following a directive from former President Donald Trump, aimed at rebranding artificial intelligence to mitigate negative connotations.
Musk specifically noted the companies’ joint initiatives at their Terafab manufacturing facility in Texas aimed at AI chip production, alongside the imperative of artificial intelligence for the efficiency of Tesla’s humanoid robots.
Furthermore, Tesla’s autonomous vehicle capabilities hinge on AI, a challenge that could be facilitated through SpaceX’s satellite connectivity.
The prospective success of SpaceX’s Starlink project, which envisions vast data centers in orbit, may yield significant advantages for Tesla.
Another potential motivation for Musk’s eagerness towards a merger is the prospect of enhancing personal wealth.
A contentious change-in-control clause embedded in a multibillion-dollar Tesla compensation plan ratified last year stipulates that specific performance metrics would be considered fulfilled in certain merger scenarios, including benchmarks mandating Tesla to deliver 20 million vehicles and deploy one million autonomous Tesla robotaxis.
With the recent gains in Tesla and SpaceX stocks, Musk has reclaimed the title of the world’s first and only trillionaire, as Forbes estimates his net worth now at approximately $1.004 trillion, reflecting an increase of $80 billion after mere hours of trading.
Despite the buoyant sentiment on Wall Street regarding the merger, skepticism may lurk within another power center in the United States: Washington.
A cadre of lawmakers, predominantly affiliated with the Democratic Party, has expressed concerns that Musk wields excessive influence and may seek regulatory measures that could detrimentally affect his enterprises, particularly regarding federal contracts.
SpaceX currently holds substantial contracts with the federal government and anticipates additional engagements as NASA endeavors to return astronauts to the Moon shortly.

Concurrently, Tesla is under scrutiny concerning multiple safety investigations over its driver-assistance software, which Musk aims to harness for the transformation of millions of its vehicles into fully autonomous taxis.
The Democratic Party’s potential electoral success in the forthcoming midterm elections could derail these ambitious plans.
