The Evolving Landscape of Festive Smartphone Sales in India

The festive season in India has historically signified a golden opportunity for smartphone enthusiasts seeking lucrative discounts.

Consumers often bide their time, eagerly anticipating the October offers that traditionally herald steep price reductions and enticing deals. Retailers, in turn, heavily rely on these promotions to drive robust sales during this celebratory period.

Currently, however, India’s smartphone retailers are navigating a precarious landscape. The soaring prices of devices this year, predominantly due to escalating memory and component costs, have curtailed the ability to extend the generous discounts that shoppers have come to expect.

In response, retailers and manufacturers are adapting their strategies, eschewing straightforward price cuts in favor of a diverse array of offers, including cashback, trade-in promotions, and accessible financing options aimed at maintaining affordability, if not outright reductions.

Understanding the Surge in Smartphone Prices

The surge in pricing is particularly pronounced in the lower and mass-market smartphone categories. As per a bill-of-materials analysis conducted by Counterpoint Research, the costs for components used in low-end smartphone configurations have escalated by an astonishing 70 percent year-over-year during the quarter, with memory prices accounting for the bulk of this increase.

Counterpoint’s global price tracker reveals that global smartphone retail prices have surged by 15 percent in 2026 so far, while India has witnessed an alarming 21 percent increase, marking the highest rise among the markets surveyed.

Data collated by the All India Mobile Retailers Association (AIMRA), representing 150,000 mainstream retailers, indicates that prices for multiple smartphone models have soared significantly since November of the previous year.

For instance, Vivo’s T4 Lite 6GB/128GB variant, launched at ₹10,999 in June 2025, now commands a staggering ₹20,999, translating to an almost 91 percent increase.

Similarly, Oppo’s F-series demonstrates a similar trend. The F31 8GB/128GB model was launched at ₹26,999, while its successor, the upcoming F35 8GB/128GB, is priced at ₹42,999—an exponential increase of 59 percent, despite minimal enhancements, such as a front camera upgrade from 16 MP to 50 MP and an improvement in battery capacity from 7,000 mAh to 8,000 mAh.

Rajveer Shah, Global Chief Strategy Officer at MITSUMI Distribution, noted that brands have indeed passed on a substantial portion of price hikes via revised pricing structures, yet distributors and retailers have absorbed some costs to maintain shelf prices during this crucial festive period.

Wholesale increases have been particularly acute for premium models, while certain mass-market brands have been more reluctant to alter prices.

Naveen Malpani, Partner and Consumer & Retail Industry Leader at Grant Thornton Bharat, forewarned that additional upward pressure from component costs is anticipated.

Shifting Dynamics of Festive Discounts

Brands and their channel partners are increasingly favoring targeted support strategies over straightforward reductions in wholesale or retail prices.

Shah elucidated that this approach encompasses margin support, price protection assurances, and incentives that correlate with retail performance.

Retailers are also adapting to this trend. This festive season, we predict fewer outright price cuts on smartphones compared to last year.

Instead, offers will likely focus on affordability-driven options such as EMIs and exchange bonuses, predicted Shibashish Roy, CEO & MD of Infiniti Retail Limited, which operates Croma.

The promotional package for the Oppo F35, set to debut on October 10, exemplifies this emerging strategy.

Consumers can choose zero-down-payment financing for up to 18 months on the F35 Pro and 15 months on the F35, with options for no-cost EMIs of up to nine months available alongside a 10 percent instant cashback for select bank cards.

Additionally, full payments and UPI transactions also qualify for 10 percent cashback. This package further includes an exchange bonus of up to 10 percent and an assured buyback of up to 70 percent for ₹399, along with a 50 percent discount on OPPO Enco Buds3 Pro+ when purchased with the device.

Pressure on Margins Within Retail Circles

The transformation also underscores mounting pressure on retail margins. Shah remarked that device margins are tightening, compelling distributors to adopt a heavier reliance on volume-linked incentives, financing partnerships, exchange initiatives, and enhanced after-sales support.

Kailash Lakhyani, Founder Chairman of AIMRA, highlighted that traditional brand support has become increasingly limited, necessitating a greater reliance on cashback initiatives from banks, upgrade incentives, trade-ins, and extended no-cost EMI plans.

Moreover, retailers are exercising increased caution regarding inventory management. Instead of amassing significant stock in anticipation of rising prices, distributors are aligning their inventory to match assured brand commitments and pre-booked demand, as mentioned by Shah.

The Ascendance of Financing in Online Sales

Amazon India is anticipating heightened demand for smartphones during its forthcoming Great Indian Festival commencing on October 8.

Zeba Khan, Director of Consumer Electronics at Amazon India, indicated that the company’s strategy is centered on affordability rather than mere price cuts.

During Prime Day 2026, we noted that a substantial proportion of buyers utilized financing options to upgrade, with one in four electronics purchases on EMI, and four out of five of those employing no-cost EMI.

This value proposition is already reflected in our Early Deals, enabling customers to access a 10 percent instant discount when using SBI credit and debit cards, along with additional benefits for Prime members purchasing through the Amazon Pay ICICI Bank credit card, Khan elaborated.

Sales Driven by Affordability Rather Than Discounts

Malpani from Grant Thornton Bharat posited that this festive season is shifting away from a model heavily reliant on deep discounts towards a paradigm focused on value-driven affordability.

Consumers are increasingly inclined to leverage exchange deals, bank cashback, and no-cost EMI options, while some may gravitate towards older models, more economically priced devices, or opt to extend their replacement cycles. Additionally, the refurbished phone sector may see a favorable impact from this shift.

AIMRA’s Lakhyani, however, observed a pronounced bifurcation across income and price segments. He noted that buyers with access to financing are utilizing longer EMIs, while more price-sensitive consumers are shifting to lower-tier specifications, refurbished or second-hand devices, or simply deferring upgrades by six to twelve months.

In a contrasting view, Roy of Croma indicated that demand in the mid and premium segments has remained stable, revealing no substantial signs of consumers opting to trade down or delay purchases. He asserted that the sluggishness in the lower-price stratum is more a supply issue than a lack of demand.

The juxtaposition of these perspectives highlights a widening gap across price segments. Counterpoint’s findings corroborate that the ultra-premium segment maintains a degree of resilience, buoyed by financing options, whereas the sub-₹15,000 segment has experienced a more pronounced contraction.

Temporary Relief for Festive Pricing

At this juncture, brands and channel partners appear willing to absorb a portion of the cost increase associated with volume-driving models throughout the festive season. Nonetheless, Shah cautioned that this accommodation serves as merely a temporary reprieve.

A person draws a thought bubble with the word Brand on a white desk surrounded by office and art supplies.

Industry insiders anticipate subsequent price hikes to follow the festive quarter, leaving retailers with a constricted timeframe for adaptation.

For consumers, the upcoming festive bargains may increasingly hinge not on dramatic reductions in the device’s price tag, but on financing options, the devices exchanged, and the additional incentives bundled along with the purchase.
