iOS 27 Launches with Enhanced Siri Capabilities
On Monday, iOS 27 will make its debut, heralding a significant evolution in Apple’s virtual assistant, Siri, which now boasts capabilities that far exceed those of its predecessors.
This new iteration of Siri is adept at reading emails, managing calendar events, performing actions across various applications, and engaging in conversations with a remarkable degree of context retention, extending beyond 20 conversational turns. Such functionalities have remained elusive until now.
The enhancement is chiefly attributed to a pivotal agreement with Google. Apple has forged a multi-year partnership, reportedly valued at approximately $1 billion annually, to harness the power of Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro for Siri’s artificial intelligence.
This model possesses eight times the parameter count compared to Apple’s proprietary AI frameworks.
Importantly, user data is processed via Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, ensuring that Google remains unaware of user identities when handling queries. This unconventional partnership reflects a candid acknowledgment of the current limitations of Apple’s own AI models.
This update is accessible to every iPhone user as a complimentary upgrade to iOS 27. However, the advanced Siri AI is limited to newer models, specifically the iPhone 15 Pro, Apple’s flagship device for 2023.
This decision encompasses approximately three and a half generations of devices, translating to a user base of around 150 to 200 million.
Older iPhone models will still benefit from other iOS 27 improvements, such as revamped notifications and enhanced child safety features, though Siri’s functionality will remain unchanged for these devices.
The recently announced iPhone 17 models will incorporate a larger on-device AI model, facilitating swifter and more adept responses from Siri.
In practical applications, the newly optimized Siri establishes connections with users’ calendars and email inboxes once access is granted.
For instance, users can request the assistant to locate last week’s email regarding a dental appointment and execute that task across two applications within a single command.
Furthermore, in macOS 27, the Siri AI seamlessly integrates with Spotlight, evolving the search bar into a more robust task-running interface.
Apple asserts that the assistant maintains a coherent dialogue throughout over 20 successive interactions.
However, the true landscape of this launch becomes apparent when considering its limitations. Initially, the Siri AI will only support English, with additional languages including French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish expected to follow suit in October.
Mandarin lacks a confirmed rollout timeline. A notable absence exists in Europe, where Apple has elected not to enable Siri AI on any iPhone or iPad devices due to an ongoing dispute regarding the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
This regulation mandates that Apple grant rival AI assistants equivalent access to device functionalities that Siri enjoys.
Apple contended that complying could compromise safety and suggested a ‘Trusted System Agent’ framework, which the European Commission subsequently rejected, leading to Apple’s decision to exclude the EU from this launch.
Nevertheless, Mac users within the EU will still gain access to Siri AI, as macOS is governed by different DMA compliance regulations. For iPhones and iPads in Europe, no rollout timeline has yet been established.
iOS 27 will be available for free download on Monday, September 14, while the iPhone 17 series, engineered to accommodate the more sophisticated on-device Siri AI model, will commence sales on October 23.
The true efficacy of Siri’s enhanced capabilities will ultimately be assessed in the markets where it is permitted to operate.
