Speculation surrounding a foldable iPhone has proliferated for months, but definitive glimpses emerged in December 2025, thanks to a now-removed YouTube presentation by Jon Prosser.
Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has projected a launch timeframe for the device, indicating potential availability in late 2026 or early 2027.
As we approach the customary timing for Apple’s annual announcements—September and October—the anticipation for further leaks and insights about the foldable iPhone intensifies.
Thus far, leaks suggest that the new device will adopt a fold format—or a “book format”—as opposed to a traditional flip phone. Preliminary assessments indicate that the device’s thickness might approximate that of two stacked iPhone Airs.
Moreover, it’s plausible that the iPhone Air itself benefited from the research and development aimed at the foldable device, potentially serving as a prototype for real-world usability evaluations.
The nomenclature for this innovative iPhone remains uncertain. While some speculate it might be dubbed the iPhone Fold, Apple is typically reticent to adopt names already in use, favoring distinct branding.
To date, certain reports suggest this upcoming device might be called the iPhone Ultra, a fitting designation considering the existing Apple Watch Ultra.
This aligns with Apple’s branding strategy, so henceforth, we shall refer to it as the iPhone Ultra.
Current leaks hint that the external display will measure approximately 5.3 to 5.5 inches, akin to that of an iPhone Mini, marginally larger than an iPhone 5. Meanwhile, the internal screen is projected to range from 7.6 to 7.8 inches, slightly smaller than an iPad Mini.
This configuration essentially converts an iPhone into a miniaturized iPad. Thus, the iPhone Ultra is anticipated to boast robust multitasking capabilities, adopting a user interface and aesthetic reminiscent of the iPad.
The iPhone Ultra is poised to be a premium offering, indicating that Apple is unlikely to compromise on quality to reduce costs. Early indications suggest the device will be powered by an A20 Pro chip alongside a C2 modem.
Interestingly, Face ID may be absent in the iPhone Ultra, with some leaks suggesting that the requisite components cannot be miniaturized sufficiently.
This is perplexing, especially given that Face ID is available on the iPhone Air—implying that the iPhone Ultra, when unfolded, could be thinner than an iPhone Air.
Instead, it appears that Touch ID will make a comeback, which, in my view, is entirely satisfactory. Personally, I find Touch ID preferable to Face ID.
