Sriram Krishnan Resigns from White House AI Advisory Role
Sriram Krishnan, a prominent adviser on artificial intelligence within the White House, has announced his resignation, effective at the close of June. Sriram Krishnan in attendance as President Donald Trump signs an executive order on artificial intelligence in the Oval Office.
While Krishnan has not elaborated on the motivations behind his departure, he expressed a desire to assist in addressing significant challenges associated with AI in America.
In a recent social media communication, he stated, “I will be leaving my role at the White House at the end of this month. Following a brief hiatus, my focus will shift towards tackling some of the pressing challenges facing America regarding AI.”
Background and Implications of the Resignation
During his tenure, Krishnan was instrumental in shaping the Trump administration’s strategy to formulate a national framework for AI regulation.
He played a pivotal role in the US government’s AI action plan, which encompassed policy initiatives and international diplomacy efforts.
Krishnan’s exit coincides with President Trump exploring options for potential government investments in artificial intelligence enterprises.
“There’s a unique aspect to this, as it could evolve into a partnership with the American populace,” Trump remarked to reporters on Friday. A meeting with AI executives is anticipated in the coming week.
Furthermore, earlier this week, the President endorsed an executive order advocating a hands-off posture concerning cybersecurity threats posed by AI, simultaneously urging developers to allow voluntary governmental access to their AI models.
In a related development, earlier this year, the Pentagon blacklisted the company Anthropic after it declined to permit the military to utilize its systems for domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weaponry.
David Sacks, who oversees AI and cryptocurrency initiatives at the White House, indicated that Krishnan would continue to offer his expertise as an external advisor moving forward.
Notably, in May, Krishnan was part of a collaborative effort with Google, Microsoft, and xAI, which secured early governmental access to their AI models for assessment and enhancement of security prior to public deployment.
White House spokesperson Kush Desai noted that Sriram has been a “critical asset for the White House and President Trump’s efforts to secure American leadership in technology and innovation.”
Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, was among those who acknowledged Krishnan’s contributions and expressed gratitude for his service.
