The privacy-centric search engine, DuckDuckGo, is experiencing a notable uptick in application installations and user engagement amidst rising scrutiny of Google’s increasingly sophisticated AI-driven Search functionalities.
This escalation comes on the heels of significant updates unveiled by Google at its recent I/O developer conference, where the tech giant expanded its repertoire of AI-generated summaries, conversational search interfaces and introduced a novel ‘AI Mode’.
This mode empowers users to pose follow-up inquiries directly within the Search framework, thereby circumventing the conventional route of sifting through traditional website links.
While Google heralded this enhancement as a pivotal advancement in the realm of online search, discontent has emerged among users and content creators.
Concerns have been voiced regarding the accuracy of AI-generated outcomes, diminished visibility for genuine websites, and the absence of a straightforward method to completely disengage from AI-influenced results.
DuckDuckGo has reported that this backlash has significantly amplified interest in its offerings. Between May 20 and May 25, app installations in the United States surged by an average of 18.1 percent on a weekly basis, culminating in a remarkable peak of 30.5 percent on May 25. Notably, installations on iPhones surged by an average of 33 percent during this timeframe.
Moreover, the analytics firm Apptopia corroborated this trend, revealing a 29 percent increase in DuckDuckGo’s average daily downloads in the United States over the same period.
Gabriel Weinberg, CEO of DuckDuckGo, has openly criticized Google’s recent embrace of AI, contending that users are being compelled into AI-centric experiences with insufficient alternatives.
“Google is force-feeding AI with no way to opt out,” remarked Weinberg. “Consequently, their results are deteriorating rather than improving.”
DuckDuckGo is increasingly marketing itself as a viable alternative for users desiring greater agency over the integration of AI in their search experiences.
The company notes a significant increase in traffic to its AI-free search variant, which disables AI-generated summaries and imagery by default.

Despite advocating for an AI-free search atmosphere, DuckDuckGo continues to provide optional AI functionalities through its Duck.ai platform.
The company’s emphasis remains on safeguarding user privacy, explicitly stating that it does not retain users’ search histories or AI dialogues for training purposes.
The burgeoning interest in DuckDuckGo underscores a broader discourse regarding the future trajectory of internet search.

As organizations like Google hastily integrate generative AI within their frameworks, a segment of users appears to favor more traditional search methodologies that prioritize direct web links, privacy, and an individual’s prerogative over automated AI-generated responses.
