Tehran Electronic Commerce Association Urges Restoration of Internet Services
On April 12, the Tehran Electronic Commerce Association issued a fervent appeal for the prompt and comprehensive reinstatement of internet services, asserting that stable connectivity is an “indispensable prerequisite for the rejuvenation of economic vitality and optimism within society,” as articulated in a robust statement.
The persistent disruptions to internet access are profoundly impacting Iran’s burgeoning digital economy, which spans ride-hailing, food delivery, e-commerce, and online banking.
Millions of Iranians rely heavily on application-based services for their everyday transactions, and these restrictions have exacerbated the economic repercussions stemming from the ongoing conflict.
In its statement, the association indicated that operators of online businesses and the digital economy had “mobilized all available resources to stay accessible” to the public, despite the stringent internet shutdowns and communication barriers enforced during wartime.
In response to perceived threats to the state, Iranian authorities have activated the controversial “National Internet,” a measure that limits connectivity to local servers while effectively severing access to the global World Wide Web, according to internet rights organizations.
This time around, the throttling of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) has reached unprecedented levels, rendering most providers unable to connect, as Iranian authorities continue to engage in a relentless game of cat and mouse with independent providers capable of circumventing internet restrictions.
“The right to internet access, beyond mere daily utilities, significantly affects the livelihoods, employment opportunities, and income generation of a substantial segment of society,” the association’s statement emphasized.
“Communications limitations must be alleviated expeditiously to prevent further detriment to household economies and the private sector.”
The association commended digital enterprises for their relentless commitment to providing services around the clock during the conflict, characterizing their endeavors as “another front of responsibility,” while banking services remained operational despite Israeli airstrikes targeting banking IT infrastructure.
“While a ceasefire has been established, what will linger in our collective consciousness from these days is a challenging shared experience marked by resilience and fortitude,” the statement asserted.
Internet access was curtailed shortly after the war ignited on February 28, a strategy that authorities have previously employed during periods of unrest, including the protest movements of 2019 and 2022.
However, the current wartime restrictions are notably more extensive, with reports indicating near-total shutdowns in certain regions.
This appeal adds to the escalating pressure from the business sector for a return to stable economic circumstances. Private banks resumed comprehensive services on April 12, and tax deadlines have been deferred until May 21.
Other components of the Iranian economy that remain offline include the stock exchange, which is suspended until further notice, as well as airlines and airport facilities severely impacted by Israeli assaults.
